After seeing his rice field under water for more than a month, a farmer in Kalasin has to find his own way to survive.

Boworn Chaiprasert said he was using a land plot at his house in Yang Talad district to grow centella, with a promise from buyers to come to purchase it at home.

His house at Ban Ummao has been flooded since July after downpours triggered by tropical storm Sonca in Kalasin and northeastern provinces.

"I have to find a second job while I am waiting for money from the government. That will be used for the next crop," he said.

"In the meantime, I could earn some from growing centella," he added.

Kalasin is one of the six provinces which remain flooded, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Monday. Others are Roi Et, Yasothon, Ubon Ratchathani, Ayutthaya and Prachin Buri.

However, Mr Boworn, 60, cannot expect flooding to go away soon, as Kalasin governor Suwit Khamdee said water levels of the Chee River and its two tributary, Pao and Pan, only slightly reduced due to the huge amount of water of the three rivers following the rain in the province.

The cabinet on Aug 8 decided to allocate the central budget to help farmers in flooded areas. Each household receives 3,000 baht in cash, in addition to financial aid for those whose house is damaged by flooding.
