How good is Thai food for you?

The big attraction to Isan has nothing to do with the lifestyle, food, cheap things, weather etc., (which in my mind aren't all pluses) and everything to do with the amount of hot women here.

On the subject of Thai food. Here's my story.

At around the ten year mark of living here, I gained around twenty kilos and developed high blood pressure.  Around two years ago, I decided to go back to my old style of eating, exercising, etc., which was a lean farang food way of eating...same way I ate back in the states  Within less than a year, I lost twenty-two Kilos, and my blood pressure dropped to 110/60.  My goal was never to lose weight or anything.  I just decided to stop eating so much Thai food, no alcohol, and went back to exercising. Contrary to what people want to believe, Thai food is not that healthy for you.

A single plate of Pad-Thai:

Calories: 1,131
Fat: 40 grams
Sodium: 2,594 mg
Protein: 33 grams
Carbohydrates: 160 grams

I won't even go into all the preservatives, steroids, chemicals, and hormones, they inject into farm animals.  Sugar, sodium, palm oil and MSGs are used excessively in a lot of Thai food.

losing all that weight in 1 year, it can be done, i also lost weight a few years back, as blood pressure was far higher than it should be, as the weight went down so did the blood pressure. I have put a little back on though  :-[  as the hardest thing in losing weight is keeping it off, so a routine is needed. bearing in mind a lot of expats are on the elderly road, making exercise not so easy, some times i think if i can't have what i want now, i won't get it when i'm gone.

google says. The combination of noodles, lean protein and vegetables dressed in a sweet peanut sauce raises no red flags, but the oil it is stir-fried in does. Once it leaves the wok, a cup of pad Thai clocks in at over 600 calories and has nearly 20 g of fat. That translates into 10 Weight Watchers points.

Not all thai food is fattening or unhealthy, i eat what i want, when i want, the hardest thing here is there are so many different choices, to much to choose from, call it age if you like, but what did i eat yesterday, sometimes have to think. funny how the mind works, we can always remember what the important things to us were in life, like the first day as a child we started at school, even remember some of the teachers names. but yesterday err... what did i eat.

isaan food, in which glutinous rice, khao niao and chili peppers are prominent, it was different from central Thai cuisine, though it is now found throughout the kingdom. Sticky rice is a staple of northeastern cuisine and it accompanies most meals. so many different dishes to choose from, no chance of getting bored having to eat the same old thing. when i think of what my every day diet was back home, bread, potatoes and things like that. gone are the days when favourite foods were black pudding and spotted dick. you now pay over 5 pounds for fish and chips take away in the uk and when you get home you have to scrape the skin of the fish off the grease proof paper and all the soggy chips are stuck together, you would soon complain if a restaurant served it up on a plate like that. ain't we strange, British tradition what! what! ol boy...

Yes, lots of delicious food in Korat. Tonight, Mrs TT and I went to Super Seafood in Friendship Alley 5/1. This is off Sirinakhon Road where the Walrus used to be. Super Seafood has very delicious crabs and prawns.  Afterwards we topped the evening off just round the corner at Hop Beer House where a pretty competent band were knocking out some nice stuff.  Calories consumed? No idea.
If the old only could, if the young only knew.


Thai food is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. you can't judge it by one single dish. take Tom Yum Soup for instance. Soup to boost your immune system. Thai tom yum soup currently is under study for its ability to fight off cold and flu viruses, and perhaps even cancer. before you say the coconut milk is bad for you, it has a bad reputation i agree, in fact it is extremely healthy. Boosts immune system, lowers bad cholesterol, it even fights aging.

many of the fresh herbs and spices used in Thai cooking, turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, and fresh chilies all have immune boosting and disease fighting power. Turmeric has the ingredient Curcumin, an anti inflammatory agent which also relieves arthritis, anti oxidant good for circulation and protecting the heart. Galangal a relative of the ginger family, it is said helps deafness and heart disease to indigestion. Galangal is also sold in dried form as a powder, usually called Laos Powder. even more benefits if you can buy it fresh. can't find it then use fresh ginger.

Lemongrass, oh you could go on and on, in fact Coriander the seed has been used since ancient times by healers. even eating chilies helps you sleep better, keeps your heart healthy, and help maintain consistent insulin and glucose levels.

so there you have it, eat in moderation is the answer. very interesting thread.

Hello to all, yes nan everything in moderation, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and a little bit of what you enjoy.

few years back although i eat well, i got gout, with medication from the doctor it eased then came back, this went on for a long time. my wife speaking to an old lady in a store we use, said where is your husband, i not seen him in a long time, in the car she replied, he has gout and the medication is not making much difference.

She said to try a root plant, i could not tell you the thai name, but it sounded like krachai, bright yellow smooth, boiled up, strain water off add lemon, drop of honey to take the taste away, stored in the fridge, i took this for 2 weeks the swelling went down, another 2 weeks it was gone.

I have since found out although it is an ingriedient in thai cooking, also well known for treating rheumatoid problems. research is underway to find the antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and other medicinal properties of this plant.

right on our very doorstep


What are we having guys

unlike the western style of eating, sharing dishes is the norm for thais, loads and loads of different plates with mouth watering eats, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, then if there is something you dont like, there is plenty of others to choose from. everyone will first discuss what to have and what each wants, a team effort, talking about what to eat the palate can almost taste the food before it is even served.

unlike westerners when they have ordered their prefered meal and then look at what you ordered to eat and say, i wish i ordered that.

you have to go with the flow thai style as sometimes the dishes dont come out all at once, they come one by one, when they are ready. thai food to me is the best in the world, can you walk the length of any market, without wanting something to sample, of course not. whether it be juicy pieces of grilled pork on a stick or a fiery bowl of ‘Tom Yum’ soup. Tom Yum Goong. one of my favourites, a herbal kick as well, fresh prawns, mushrooms, the sour spicy hot taste just screams out at you, lemongrass, chilli, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice and fish sauce makes up the soup.

generally Thai food is very good for you depending on who is cooking it, more healthy if you cook and eat at home as you can control the ingredients. when cooking vegetables,seafood or fish,easy on the oil. you can use just coconut oil, How do some thai girls retain their figure amazes me, although thai people tend to eat lots of times in one day, the portions are small.

if your after weight loss try using smaller plates  today for 45 baht, i had chicken stir fry. good ere init

i watched the chef at work he heated up the wok, added a spoonful of oil, then quickly sautes about one cup of chopped up chicken. all served up with a portion of rice and sliced cucumbers. in all not more than 500 calories and it filled me up. eating the rice which is filling and full of protein i was no longer looking for more. now where are those small plates

You can eat Thai food anyway you like, thats up to you as they say. if your out with the lads tuck in the way you enjoy to eat,who cares. but if your out to eat with in a more respectful company, with your elders or even your boss at work or maybe your wifes family. always nice to show good manners and it gets noted.  not sure whether i agree with all of this vid.  now will you stop slurping ;)
