Scams & Crime / Foreigners accuse Pattaya bank...
Last post by Johnnie F. - February 02, 2021, 11:07:19 PM
CHON BURI: A group of foreigners and their Thai wives in Pattaya have filed a complaint against an assistant branch manager of a commercial bank on fraud charges after he had allegedly taken money from their accounts.

Around a dozen foreigners and their wives on Tuesday filed the complaint with Pol Col Phisit Phoolsap chief of Pattaya police station against Mr Chaisit Sappermphool, a former assistant manager of a bank branch in Pattaya.

Some of them also accused him of allegedly duping them into investing in some funds, causing them to lose money.

The complainants said they had deposited their retirement funds at the Pattaya branch and Mr Chasit had helped them with deposits, withdrawals and passbook updates for several years.

The irregularities were found when some of them updated their passbooks at other branches. They found the balances did not match what was shown in their passbooks. When they showed the passbooks and the transfer slips as evidence, they were told the documents were not the versions currently used by the bank.

Chiang Mai greenlights reopening of pubs, bars as no infections in 19 days[/b]

Good for the owners, but how many customers will dare visit them. How many will have learned that fun doesn't depend upon hanging around a bar, that fun can also be had without such risks as Covid?

World News / A Coup in Myanmar again?
Last post by Johnnie F. - February 01, 2021, 10:52:54 AM
Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party have been detained in an early morning raid, the spokesman for the governing National League for Democracy said on Monday.

The move comes after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military that stirred fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army says was fraudulent.

The cassette-tape-comeback is rolling, but there is another problem to it: to get a superb sound from a cassette tape you also need a superb cassette deck.

Portables are slowly showing up again on the shelves. But what about a decent cassette deck for my hi-end stereo? Buy a second-hand? There is a huge supply!

For example have a look at kaidee.com, where you'll find the finest machines from the last century at ridiculous prices. They might come well maintained and fully functioning to you, but what, if a problem occurs shortly thereafter?

Take it to the repair shop AMORN at IT Plaza (former Nor-East City)? Around 20 years ago they had many qualified mechanics there and fixed my Sansui deck and my Superscope portable, when they needed new belts. But two years ago I brought both there in vain: "No can do!" With that experience in mind I decided not to order one of those second-hand machines from Kaidee.

As I kept looking for a good new old stock tape deck in Thailand I found only a 1995 model mid-range deck at Lazada: ROTEL  RD-960BX for 6,900 Baht, reduced from 12,900. Better than none!

But I kept looking. Finally I found one I like at ubuy.co.th, an international market place: a 2002 SONY TC-WE475 made in Japan. Importing that from the US to Thailand of course did cost a huge lot more: about 32,000 for the tape deck with shipping plus almost 9,000 for customs, tax and handling in Thailand.

The big advantage is, that I can take it to the SONY Servive Center in Korat, if it needs repair or maintenance, not having to carry it home again after an idiot answer "No can do!" The manufacturer's branch would send it to a place that could do it. Still I keep fingers crossed!

Aren't we lucky to have come to Thailand long before this pandemic? Who would choose to come now with almost everything locked down?

"The Kingdom of Thailand has been ranked as the fourth country in the world that has most effectively handled the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new analysis released by independent Australian think tank the Lowy Institute,

The Covid Performance Index: Deconstructing Pandemic Responses, ranked New Zealand at the top of the list, followed by Vietnam and Taiwan, Thailand, and Cyprus."

Expat News / Overstaying the Welcome
Last post by Johnnie F. - January 29, 2021, 04:42:35 PM
There is an interesting comment on Thaienquirer.com:

The ex-pats in Koh Phangan have overstayed their welcome

"This past week, over 80 foreign ex-pats and/or tourists were arrested on Koh Phangan for partying into the night in clear violation of the emergency decree designed to keep the reemergence of coronavirus in check. Many feigned that they had no knowledge of the emergency decree..."

Now come on, can that really be overlooked? At least I cannot imagine anybody travelling or moving to another country - and then be totally oblivious to what goes on around.

"...while others blamed the Thai bar owner for keeping his establishment open."

Is it possible to imagine people needing limits instead of brain?

There is also a report on Bangkok Post about how the law dealt with those:

Fines, suspended jail terms for Koh Phangan partygoers

SURAT THANI: The 109 people caught partying at a bar on Koh Phangnan in contravention of Covid-19 restrictions have been fined 4,000 baht each.

They were also each sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for one year.

A total of 109 customers were detained - 89 foreigners (38 men and  51 women) and 20 Thais (7 men and 13 women) - when immigration and tourist police and local officials raided the Three Sixty Bar in Koh Phangan district on Tuesday night.

Social & Demographic / Returning undue elderly pensio...

There are more and more reports on the media, where retired people are demanded to repay large sums of pension payments even with interest, because it seems that government officials who helped them file for these payments had made mistakes in their support.

A story from Korat is in the day before yesterday's Bangkok Post
