Very weird and a little bit frightening

World’s first hotel run by Actroids will be in Japan

Actroids are robots which look like a human, act like a human, speak like a human and so on. They will smile at you, they will make you a coffee and they will do a lot of human things. These human-like robots have been developed by Osaka University and manufactured by Kokoro. The first Actroid was unveiled in 2003, but the current generation is improved, and it represents a Japanese woman who speaks Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English and she has the ability to make hand gestures, eye movements and many other human things. Hope it won’t work as Siri or Cortana.

TOKYO CITY SERIES: ACTROID

A world run by Actroids is closer than you think. This year a new hotel will be built in Japan near Nagasaki city. The name is Henn-na Hotel and it will be placed within Huis Ten Bosch, a theme park which seeks  to recreate a Dutch town with a specific architecture. In the hotel, people will meet 3 uniformed Actroids which will serve as reception staff, another 4 will be porter and service robots, while others will work as cloak room attendants and cleaners. Also, among these Actroids there are 10 human members of staff, ready to react if a robot will slap you because you said a funny joke (Actroids don’t understand human jokes). A night at this hotel will cost minimum ¥7000 (around $1120) and the hotel is scheduled to open in July 2015.

If you think the minimum cost at this hotel is expensive, well it is actually cheaper than other hotels from the theme park, where a night cost at least ¥20000. This is possible because these robots have a power-saving equipment and renewable energy, so these things lead to reduced costs. And if this project will be successful, in 2016 we could see a special facility for building Actroids.

Now I’m afraid that this kind of project could create a future like we’ve seen in ‘I, Robot’ movie, where robots started to think on their own. Maybe I’m paranoid, but the technology has evolved so much lately and so fast, so we must be careful about what we do. Wrong choices could lead to a world where the human being take orders from robots. We don’t want a world like that. Or do you?

Japan robot receptionist welcomes shoppers

TOKYO - She can smile, she can sing and this robot receptionist who started work in Tokyo on Monday never gets bored of welcoming customers to her upmarket shop.

Humanoid ChihiraAico, clad in a Japanese kimono, greets a customer at an entrance of a department store in Tokyo, on April 20, 2015

"My name is ChihiraAico. How do you do?" she says in Japanese, blinking and nodding to customers in the foyer of Mitsukoshi, Japan's oldest department store chain.

Clad in an elegant traditional kimono, ChihiraAico -- a name that sounds similar to a regular Japanese woman's name -- breaks into a rosy-lipped smile as would-be shoppers approach.

Unlike her real-life counterparts -- almost always young women -- who welcome customers to shops like this, ChihiraAico cannot answer questions, but simply runs through her pre-recorded spiel.
