Index of Ignorance: Thailand ranks as one of the most ignorant countries

Thailand has ranked 7th on the “Index of Ignorance,” a survey that compared people’s answers about their society with factual information.

Conducted by Ipsos MORI, a research company based in London, the survey asked 27,250 participants in 40 countries questions including: perceived happiness level, acceptance of homosexality, tolerance of abortion, what the Muslim population of their country is, and who might win in the 2016 U.S. election. Then, they looked at how accurate the respondents’ answers were when compared with facts.

According to their results, these are the top ten most “ignorant” countries:

1. India

2. China

3. Taiwan

4. South Africa

5. United States

6. Brazil

7. Thailand

8. Singapore

9. Turkey

10. Indonesia

On the other end of the chart, these are the least “ignorant” countries:

1. Netherlands

2. Great Britain

3. South Korea

4. Czech Republic

5. Malaysia

6. Australia

7. Germany

8. Italy

9. Norway

10. Sweden

Some of the interesting findings include the fact that Thai people are pessimistic about their happiness level. When asked what percentage of people in their country they think are happy, respondents guessed 51 percent, when the actual answer was that 98 percent of Thai people said they were happy.

When it comes to property, Thais underestimate the number of people who own the house they live in. Out of every 100 households, 70 of them are owned by the residents while Thais guessed only 51 percent of homes have the owner residing in them. However, nearly all countries massively underestimated the number of owned households.

The findings on Thailand about abortion and the acceptance of homosexuality were not presented in the chart.

Globally, most countries think that their population is much more Muslim than it actually is and all countries think that their population is less happy than they say they are.

Most countries are more tolerant of homosexuality, abortion and premarital sex than they think they are.

As the survey was conducted in the month of the U.S. elections, it asked the participants if they thought Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton would be elected. While most of the world predicted that Clinton would win, Russians had the most Trump-friendly results. In that country 50 percent of respondents thought that Trump would win.

lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned

Wow, Yanks are 5th most ignorant, even before Thais! Funny to read US expats coming down upon Thais on the forums all the time. ;)

Doesn't hold an ounce of truth.  A research company did this survey, and where are they based? ...And who were the "participants" of this survey?  Every country has dumb folks. Where did they conduct this BS survey and with who?  It's random according to them, so you don't know who you're talking to or interviewing do you?. Could be the darkie down the street or some white trailer trash.  Amazing. lol. Wait, maybe it could be one of the 12 million of illegal immigrants living in America.

"Ipsos MORI's research is conducted via a wide range of methodologies, especially computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI), as well as face-to-face and internet surveys. Telephone surveys use a method called random digit dialing (Ipsos MORI being exempt from the Telephone Preference Service as it only blocks telephone calls that involve selling). This system basically uses randomly generated, but area-specific, telephone numbers. This is the preferred method for telephone samples as ex-directory households are included thus not biasing the sample in any way. Ipsos MORI are able to lawfully to use this technology as they use it for research purposes as opposed to sales and advertising."

 ignorant or arrogant ;)

If someone can't tell you how many people think the sun revolves around the earth, does that make them make ignorant.
ignorance does not help your post one bit but it probably says an awful lot about you.

Interesting but stupid

The questions asked are not relevant or beneficial to ones every day living or life. Like how many bht to the pound and nothing to do with bread 'n' butter on the table. To me being ignorant is ie: while your having your conversation with the bank teller, someone interrupts you and rudely pushes in, we all know who's no.1 for that.

So if you don't know the answers to below, that doesn't make you ignorant in my book.

What is the current population of Great Britain
Out of every 100 people in Great Britain how many say they are happy?
What percentage of Great Britain's total GDP do you think is spent on health each year?

If someone can't tell you how many people think the sun revolves around the earth, does that make them make ignorant.

People used to think the world was flat too. I wonder if any of these people who took this survey have ever visited any of the countries listed, or are they talking out their a.ss.  It's like the farangs who come to Thailand, visit only the bar districts, marry bar girls, never visit any of the historical sites, or learn anything about the culture, and all of a sudden they are experts on Thailand.

Let's have a look at some of these questions from the survey. I downloaded it...PDF file.

"And what do you think the population in your country is projected to be in 2050 by the United Nations?"  <--- LOL.

"What do you think the current population of your country is?"  <--- Are we counting the illegal immigrants too?

"What percentage of total annual Gross Domestic Product do you think is spent on health expenditure each year?" <--- Who gives a sh.t? Who would know this?

"What percentage of total household wealth do you think the least wealthy 70% own?" <-- All depends on what the MEDIA is brain washing you to believe.

"When asked in a survey, what percentage of people do you think said they personally believe that having an abortion is morally unacceptable?" <-- So how does this determine ignorance?

"When asked in a survey, what percentage of people do you think said they personally believe that sex between unmarried adults is morally unacceptable?"
<--Depends on what country, but in Thailand, probably 100%.

"Out of every 100 households, how many are owned by someone who lives there?" <-- Gee, I don't go around asking my neighbors if they own or financed their house....or the bank for that matter either.

The list goes on and on asking questions that have absolutely NOTHING to do with what defines and ENTIRE country as being ignorant.  Here is their opening statement to their BS survey.

"THESE ARE THE LATEST FINDINGS FROM THE
IPSOS PERILS OF PERCEPTION SURVEY. THE
RESULTS HIGHLIGHT HOW WRONG PEOPLE
ACROSS 40 COUNTRIES ARE ABOUT SOME KEY
ISSUES AND FEATURES OF THE POPULATION IN
THEIR COUNTRY."

Then this:

"LOOKING ACROSS THE FIVE QUESTIONS
ABOUT FACTUAL REALITIES, WE HAVE
CALCULATED A MEASURE OF HOW
ACCURATE THE POPULATION OF EACH
COUNTRY IS.
THIS GIVES US OUR
“INDEX OF IGNORANCE”

I will end with this.

"When asked in a survey, what percentage of people do you think said that, taking all things together, they are very happy or rather happy?"

Well that depends on whether I got laid last night or not.  :lol
