Scrapper Blackwell et al.

That Scrapper Blackwell clip that Johnnie posted set me going. Clapton must have listened to that record of When you’re down dozens of times because he picks it just perfectly.  Here is some more Scrapper:-

It's really a pity, that there are hardly any recordings of good quality from old bluesmen like Huddie Ledbetter, and in my opinion the best of all, Robert Johnson available. So we're left to Clapton et al.

Back in 1980, when I was in Gainesville, Florida, there was a guy, he called himself Johnny Hines, playing every night on the street, a crowd of students around him. He always started out with some rather dirty songs like "My Baby don't wear no drawers"; and the more booze he consumed the more religious he became, "repented" and played gospels. He was genuine and great! :)

Sounded fun in Gainesville.  Here is some Robert Johnson courtesy of The Rolling Stones. It’s a pity the Stones didn’t do more like this.

Clapton made a whole album of Robert Johnson Covers: "Me and Mr. Johnson". On Youtube is a playlist with some videos from the "Robert Johnson sessions" in the house Robert Johnson used to record at his time:
