Two police officers, including a major, have been arrested on drug possession and trafficking charges in Narathiwat and Chiang Rai provinces.

An arrest was made in Narathiwat during a raid on Friday night by a combined force of 30 officers at a restaurant in Rueso district, owned by Pol Maj Praphan Intharachai of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre.

Rueso police station superintendent Dulyaman Yaena told the Bangkok Post Sunday the raid was launched following a year-long investigation which revealed Pol Maj Praphan was unusually wealthy and possibly involved with the illegal drugs trade.

Police said a drug gang busted in Chiang Rai told them that Maj Praphan was operating a major southern drug ring in Chumphon.

During the raid, police found one kilogramme of crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, with a street value of about 13 million baht hidden inside his restaurant.

Pol Maj Praphan was later detained along with his two wives, Chanattanan Inkham and Mallika Netrdaeng.

Police also seized more than 400,000 baht in cash, seven passbooks, six credit cards, eight mobile phones, one car, several guns and ammunition.

The weapons seized were one 9mm pistol with 48 bullets, one .22 handgun with nine bullets, one M16 cartridge holder, 30 M16 bullets and one M79 grenade.

Rueso police yesterday morning continued searching Pol Maj Praphan's restaurant and found more documents apparently containing information about his alleged dealings in the drug trade.

Pol Col Dulyaman said local police were considering freezing all assets belonging to Pol Maj Praphan and his wives because they were purchased using proceeds from the drug trade.

The other arrest was made in Chiang Mai's Chiang Dao district yesterday.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Wasan Wisarutawessaphu, 45, of the Border Patrol Police Division 333, was arrested with 22,000 methamphetamine pills found hidden in his pickup truck, said Pol Maj Gen Chamnan Ruadrew, a deputy chief of the Provincial Police Region 5, yesterday.

On the same day police later searched the suspect's house in San Sai district and found 2,000 more meth pills hidden there, Pol Maj Gen Chamnan said.

Pol Maj Gen Chamnan, who is leading the investigation, said the border patrol police officer was charged with possession of Type 1 drugs with intent to distribute.

His assets, worth more than three million baht in total, were also seized along with the drugs.

He was apprehended following a tip-off that a state official had been smuggling drugs from Chiang Dao to Muang.

A combined force of border patrol police and the Phamuang Task Force in Chiang Maiset set up a joint checkpoint between Chiang Dao and Muang districts and caught Pol Sen Sgt Maj Wasan as he was driving through.
