Retired boxing champion busted ♦ Nakhon Ratchasima

Former flyweight boxing champion Prawat Rasu, alias Daoroong Kietsuriya, 50, has been arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima province and charged with possession of dried marijuana worth about 640,000 baht, police said on Friday.

Pol Col Prasopchok Prommul, suppression division chief of the provincial police region 4, said police conducted a sting operation on Thursday night at Khuntot-Chaibadan road in Dan Khuntot district after they were tipped of about an illicit drug delivery.

The suspect was apprehended when he showed up in a pickup truck along with 320kg of marijuana. Police also seized the man's mobile phone as evidence.

Mr Prawat has confessed that he was paid 40,000 baht to transport the drug from Nong Khai province to Nakhon Ratchasima province and he had done this on two other occasions, according to police.

He told police he is deeply in debt and needed the money.

The former boxing champ was charged with possession of illegal drugs with the intent to distribute and taken into custody at the Narcotics Suppression Bureau headquarters.

Daoroong Kietsuriya won many championship bouts at renowned boxing arenas such as the Lumpini Boxing Stadium and Rajadamnern Stadium. He retired as a fighter in 1989.
