PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN – Police seized illegal drugs worth around 32.6 million baht after a wild car chase during which shots were fired on Wednesday night, but the traffickers disappeared into the forest.

The police inspect the abandoned car and found a large amount of drugs.

Two men in a black sedan drove through a police checkpoint in Sam Roi Yod district and fled south on Phetkasem Road, said Pol Lt Col Pichet Ronnaritkrai, an investigator at the district police station.

Police gave chase. The fleeing vehicle accelerated through an intersection in Kui Buri district, running a red right, and then made a U-turn, he said. Two men inside the car then opened fire on pursuing police.

Police shot out one of the car's front tyres. The vehicle came to a halt on the side of the road and the drug traffickers abandoned it and fled into the forest, he said.

Pol Lt Col Pichet  said two backpacks were found on the black sedan’s backseat containing 62,000 methamphetamine pills, or yaba, and 500 grammes of heroin, and a foam box with one kilogramme of crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice.

They also found another bag holding 64,000 yaba pills in the bushes about 10 metres from the vehicle.

A wallet belonging to a man named Poowanart Chuthong, 24, was found inside the car. Spent cartridge cases found on the road were gathered as evidence.

Pol Maj Gen Thanet Sunthornsuk, chief of Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial police, said he believed the drugs were smuggled into Thailand aboard an airplane that landed at a local airstrip. The two gunmen were escorting the shipment to clients in the South. About 100 police officers and two police dogs were involved in the hunt for the two men.

Pol Maj Gen Thanet later admitted the 17-hour search was unsuccessful.

The person who rented the black sedan, Kritpakorn Kochapong, 52, told police that Mr Poowanart, owner of the wallet found in the vehicle, is a close friend of his daughter.

Mr Poowanart has asked him to rent the car, Mr Kritpakorn said. However, the man later stopped sending payments for the rental and had not been seen since.

He also identified the other man in the car as Chayun Nernkaew, a 24-year-old ranger.

His daughter’s friend is the son of a special forces policeman working in Patthalung province, Mr Kripakorn added.

Wild chase?  Since when do the police give chase to anything?  At least on the open highway they don't.
