30 monks expelled for drug abuse
« on: July 10, 2013, 12:12:11 PM »
More than 30 monks, including two abbots, have tested positive for drug use and were divested of their robes in Ban Mo district of Saraburi.

A total of 27 temples in Ban Mo district were raided and 32 monks tested positive for illegal drugs, said ecclesiastical district governor Phra Kru Supthamkun, who is also abbot of Wat Makamreang in the district.

Two of the monks were the abbots of well-known temples, he said, adding that one of them has been in the monkhood for more than 15 years and had completed the advanced level of Dhamma scholar. All of the monks who tested positive have been expelled from the monkhood and taken to rehabilitation centres, he said.

Phra Kru Supthamkun said the monks who were divested could apply to be ordained again with permission from their local village headmen, police and the district office.

Meanwhile, two monks in Pathum Thani's Wat Rangsit were arrested in their living quarters on Tuesday allegedly with 20 speed pills.

Phra Sanae Suporn, 34, and Phra Preecha Pol-ard, 26, were both divested of their robes and were taken to the Pak Khlong Rangsit police station to face charges.
