New laws being studied with the possibility of being proposed if your traveling in the same car and the driver is over the limit, you could be charged too. How do you know whether the driver has had a drink or not, say a bus driver, tuk tuk, taxi whatever. I would think they would have to prove that the passengers were aware of the state of the driver at the time.

Tougher drink drive law on way

The government is studying the possibility of adopting a law where passengers travelling in the same car as a driver found guilty of driving under the influence also face charges associated with the driver's drink-driving offences.

In my humble opinion, instead of wasting their effort creating new laws they should strengthen the enforcemnet of existing laws. Do not create more ways for the cops to get "tea money" or bribes.
If someone is stopped with drinking and driving, fine them at least 10,000 baht minimum and impound their car on the spot and make them pay a towing charge plus impound fees and make certain their insurance, including por a bor, at least triples in cost. A minimum one year licence suspension too. The second occurence everything is doubled except 5 year suspension. Third time they go to jail for a year or so.
I think that might reduce the alcohol related traffic deaths in a few years.

Yes bob heavier punishments, if it will reduce the death toll, it would be something achieved. Put a cop on every street corner that works for the people and not ;D. An article from The Nation ( below) The Drunk Driving Victims Network and Alcohol Watch has filed a petition at the Justice Ministry permanent secretary’s office calling for heavier punishments for drunk drivers, including prosecution for attempted murder.

Unfortunately it doesn't end at just curbing the drinking, impatience also plays a major part in accidents, where does the thai smile go when some get behind the wheel, only today on a trip to the market a car van nearly killed me and my family, as i indicated and was turning right, he overtook me, he just couldn't wait :-[  I wonder is courtesy a face thing

New drunk-driving law would punish families

The idea behind this legislation is to punish the parents of teens who drink and drive. That will incentivize parents and other family members to stop the drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.

“This is to make the family take more responsibility over their family members instead of letting them drive off and put other peoples’ lives at risk. However, it’s just an idea at the moment – nothing is official yet,” he added.
