A motorcyclist spilled almost 60,000 baht in cash across a road in Muang district on Tuesday afternoon and is appealing the greedy motorists who collected his money to return it to him.

He was riding a motorcycle on Chang Puak Road near Kuang Singha intersection when 1,000-baht banknotes slipped from his unzipped waist bag at about 1pm, Pol Lt Col Sitthiporn Buasook, deputy investigative chief of Chang Puak police station said.

He told Khaosod Online that he was travelling to a motorcycle shop in the district to buy a new motorbike and the money would be used for down payment. He said he forgot to zip his waist bag and only knew he had lost all the money when arriving at the shop.

He then scouted the road he had passed and was told by some bystanders that they had seen motorists stopped to gather up banknotes scattering all over the road near Lanna hospital.

He filed a complaint with Chang Puak police and contacted major local websites and online public forums to help ask the people who made off with his money to return it.

“Whoever has collected the money, please give it back. I won’t take any legal action. It happened because of my carelessness,” Khaosod Online quoted him.

Pol Lt Col Sitthiporn said photos which showed motorists collecting the 1,000-baht banknotes had been circulated on social media and there were many CCTV cameras in the area where the Chiang Mai native dropped his money. The officer urged them to return the money immediately or face a charge of theft or receiving stolen property.

So far received 5,500 baht back from the money-finders as of 6.30pm, according to Chiang Mai’s local online news website cm108.com.

The website reported that a woman showed up at Chang Puak police station and returned the money to him directly.

The story of the motorcyclist who spilled 58,000 baht in cash across a city road and then asked police to help get it back has taken a new twist - with police arresting him on an outstanding warrant for drug dealing.

Police had already returned 9,900 baht to him yesterday, after two people who made off with 5,500 baht and 4,400 baht of his lost money handed it in.

Police told him that more people had since returned money and he should come and get it.

But when he arrived at the police station on Wednesday they arrested him immediately.
