Dept of Highways to create 5-10 yr road safety plan

14 December 2017 (NNT) - The Department of Highways has been tasked with creating a 5-10 year plan on road safety, using the latest construction technology.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith spoke during a seminar with department officials, stressing the importance of improving the safety of the country's transportation infrastructure. He said greater transportation safety would enhance Thailand's economic stability and competitiveness.

The minister added that the Department of Highways must adhere to international road safety standards to reduce accidents and called for investment in the latest building technology. He also urged the department to commission roadways in line with the Thailand 4.0 development agenda.

The Department of Highways has been assigned to draft a 5-10 year plan on road safety that addresses the risks of natural disasters, such as mudslides, road subsidence and broken bridges.

Regarding the Bangkok - Nong Khai high-speed railway project, the department will begin laying pillars along the 3.5-kilometer stretch between Klang Dong and Pang Asok on December 21st. Construction is expected to take no more than six months, with other phases of the project to commence soon after.
