Five people were killed and four injured following a collision between an 18-wheel trailer truck and a passenger van in Chon Buri on Tuesday, police said.

After hitting the van, the truck's trailer overturned onto another van and a motorcycle on a road in tambon Bowin in Si Racha district.

Police said the driver and three female passengers in one of the vans died instantly. They were identified as 29-year-old driver Suthep Pohthong, Buathip Poohinkling, 28, Jaruwan Promman, 26, and Ratree Worasan, 25.

Ananchai Srikaew, the 25-year-old motorcycle driver, was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The other injured victims were taken to Phayathai Si Racha Hospital.

The driver of the 18-wheeler truck fled the scene.

The van driver who survived the collision, Chaiyuth Banmuang, told police that he had picked up employees from an industrial estate and was travelling on the Ammata-Nongkwae road before the incident.

He said the 18-wheeler truck drove into a van ahead of him and swerved out of control into his lane. He then crashed into the truck’s trailer, causing it to fall onto his vehicle.

Police are trying to track down the driver of the truck.  bangkokpost
