AOT approves ฿42 billion for Suvarnabhumi Airport expansion

The board of Airports of Thailand (AOT) has approved an investment budget of 42.1 billion baht for the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The sum, which is still subject to the cabinet's approval, will be used for the planned expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The AOT expects the airport to welcome 65 million passengers this year and 68 million in 2019.

The construction is scheduled to begin next year and should be completed in 2021.

Not before time. Suvarnabhumi gets ever more crowded.  I think Thai Airways also needs to invest some money. Mrs TT and I have just spent  a few days in Phuket.  We were surprised that our return flight was on an elderly Boeing 747.  The economics of running 747s on a 1 hour domestic flight cannot be good.  Thai Airways must be strapped for cash to upgrade the fleet.

no profit there then
A Boeing 747-8i or Airbus A380, cost around 30% less per flight hour per passenger, but fly longer haul routes. Overall, however, both the A380 and B747–8i have per hour operating costs that exceed $10,000.00.

Suvarnabhumi a first stage of expansion and a second has commenced, with a third in the offing, which will add a new terminal and runway. The total cost of actual and projected works runs to USD2.5 billion and will raise capacity to 90 million ppa by 2020.

Thailand tourism hits record high in 2017 with 35 million visitors
if don muang had not been re opened to commercial flights, they would of had an even bigger problem. now there's talk of expanding the Utapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport to handle international services, which will in turn relieve the load on the Bangkok airports.

Utapao sounds like a good opportunity for Ryanair.  Cheap flights direct to Bangkok (Utapao).
