Poll: Law enforcement problems rife
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:23:10 PM »
Thailand is plagued with problems of law enforcement, according to the results of an opinion poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) announced on Monday.

The poll involved 1,265 respondents drawn from all regions, from July 27 to Aug 1.

The huge majority, 85.85 per cent, of the people polled agreed Thailand is plagued with problems relating to law enforcement.  Only 14.15 per cent said there were no law enforcment problems.

Three major reasons given for the problem were: patronage and nepotism are rife throughout the administration (46.09 per cent); the practice of giving bribes to officials is common (44.19 per cent); and most people are basically ignorant whre it comes to matters of law (38.50 per cent).

The respondents said law enforcement officials should not take advantage of people just  because they have  little knowledge of the law, wrongdoers must be seriously punished, and the people should be treated equally without discrimination.
