Surrogate babies taken to orphanage

Nine surrogate babies found at a condominium on Lat Phrao Road in Bang Kapi district of Bangkok on Tuesday were taken to the Pakkred Babies' Home in Nonthaburi province.

Pavena Hongsakula, chair of the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, and Yanee Lertkrai, director-general of the Department of Social Development and Welfare, took the six boys and three girls, all aged 1-6 months, to the orphanage on Tivanond Road late on Tuesday night.

Acting on complaints, officials found the babies in three rooms on the ground floor of The Niche ID Ladprao condominium on Lat Phrao 130 Road in Khlongchan sub-district, Bang Kapi, on Tuesday.

The rooms reportedly belong to a Japanese man. His Thai lawyer Ratprathan Tulathorn said his client was the father of all the surrogate babies. Authorities planned to keep the babies at the orphanage pending DNA tests to verify the lawyer's account.

At the condominium authorities also found nine Thai and Japanese childminders and a woman who is about four-months pregnant and claimed to be a surrogate mother.

Mrs Pavena said that unless a surrogate mother was related to a biological parent, surrogacy should be banned in Thailand for the time being as there is no law to protect surrogate babies.

She said that at present surrogacy was commercial and babies could fall victim to adults who  sexually abuse them or could even be killed for their spinal cords for the commercial sale of their stem cells.

Another shocking discovery at Lard Prao 130 condominium

Authorities and police were shocked again after they found another 21 surrogate babies at the same condominium on Lard Prao 130 where they earlier found and brought nine surrogate babies with the same father out  to take care of by the state-owned Parkkred  nursery home.

Of the 21 children found at another room in The Niche ID condo on Lard Prao 130, 12 are male, and the rest are female. Their ages ranged from  four-month old to about 10-month-old.

The room located near a Room No 466/1551 on the seventh floor of this luxury condominium room where authorities found nine surrogate babies with same father.

Authorities said of the latest find, all the surrogate babies have foreign parents -  western and Japanese nationals  – as shown by the family names of the babies in the household registration document which has Mr Samran, a  41-year-old man, as the owner.

But it was not immediately known if how many of the babies have same fathers. Most of the babies look  western with a few look Japanese, authorities said.

Police are looking for Mr Samran for questioning as they are very suspicious why he has to take care of so many children in his room.

According to Channel 3 today, of the 21 babies, there are also triplet babies, and three twin babies.
