IconSiam
« on: October 27, 2018, 03:43:26 PM »
Who would ever think that I would post about a Mall?  I plead that this is due to circumstances beyond my control.  Armed with my shiny new Work Permit I started work last week on a new Project.  Previously, I had not enquired too closely about the location of the Project office.  Well, last week I discovered that it is in the IconSiam Mall next to the Bangkok Hilton.  The only problem is that IconSiam is still under construction and is not due to open until 9 November.  To reach the office it is necessary to pass through a hard-hat construction zone to reach the lifts.  The place is lit with temporary lighting and there are welding, grinding and drilling activities taking place all round.  The lifts are not yet fully commissioned and are being manually operated. On the 6th floor it is necessary to pick your way through scaffolding and all manner of trip hazards on the floor before reaching the relative calm of the office.  The whole area is full of guys working hard to get the Mall opened on time and I am sure it will happen.  This is one of the things I like about Thailand...things get built.  There is a huge contrast with the largely south Asian workforce I encountered on my previous Project.  Anyway, in November I will have the dubious pleasure of working inside Bangkok’s newest Mall.

Hi Nan, I will try  and post something from time to time.  I will be working mainly on the MRT Blue Line extension, with some time on the new BTS Gold Line.  It should help to keep me off the streets and will top up my ever declining state pension!

Iconsiam allots B1bn for opening festivities

Iconsiam Co is splashing out a record 1 billion baht to promote its first luxury mall in the Thon Buri area, aiming to create a new shopping district.

Company director Chadatip Chutrakul said the company is ready to open the Iconsiam mall on the banks of the Chao Phraya River next Friday, Nov 9.

"The company is spending about 700 million baht for activities to celebrate the opening, which will last three days, with the remaining 300 million used for marketing and activities until the end of this year," Mrs Chadatip said. "We expect to draw 150,000 shoppers a day."

The 54-billion-baht project is operated by a joint venture company of Siam Piwat Co, Magnolia Quality Development Corporation and Charoen Pokphand Group. The project was built on a 55-rai plot of Charoen Nakhon Road.

Iconsiam has a gross floor area of 750,000 square metres, comprising two shopping complexes. The one called Iconsiam had its design inspired by the way a krathong is folded, translating traditional Thai design signatures to modern interpretations. This mall offers retail and entertainment in 500,000 sq m.

Iconlux is to sell world-class fashion, jewellery and timepieces, spanning 250,000 sq m. Each brand is expected to be housed in an iconic store design.

Some 80-90% of anchors at Iconsiam and Iconlux will open on Nov 9. The concepts include riverside, garden, indoor and rooftop.

TrueIcon Hall, an auditorium and museum, is scheduled to open in July next year, while Fitness First plans to launch its 4,000-sq-m gym in early 2020.

"We brought together 500 retailers in the same venue," Mrs Chadatip said. "For more than 20% of these retailers, it will be their first presence in Thailand, including the first Apple Store."

Siam Takashimaya is the Japanese department store's largest branch outside its home country, while JD Sports Store from Britain will open its first flagship store in Thailand.

"JD Sports is a multi-brand sports-fashion store," said Supoj Chaiwatsirikul, Iconsiam's chief executive. "JD Sports will support Bangkok's appeal as the retail hub of the Asean Economic Community, helping make the city a favourite shopping destination for the world."

The store occupies 990 sq m on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Iconsiam.

"JD Sports is a leader in European sports fashion retailing, with over three decades of experience, and is partners with over 70 popular brands in sports, fashion and lifestyle," said Peter Cowgill, executive chairman of JD Sports.

The Iconsiam store follows JD Sports' successes in Singapore and Malaysia, he said.

Well, it opened yesterday but still a lot of construction going on.  Some of the “photos” in the BP article are renderings.
