Suspended jail for i-banking hacker

The Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old man, who hacked the accounts of 14 customers of the Siam Commercial Bank using his computers and stole money from them, to 20 years imprisonment, suspended for three years, and 48 hours of community service.

Ekkapan Kummanoi, 24, was indicted by economic cases prosecutors on charges of illegally getting access to computer data and using other people's electronic cards to steal, in violation of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crime Act of 2007.

Prosecutors told the court that between May 26 and July 18, 2011 Ekkapan hacked the accounts of 14 internet banking customers of SCB 39 times, by guessing their passwords, and stealing a total of 103,050 baht.

Ekkapan confessed he liked online games and used passwords he picked at random to hack the accounts. He tried simple number combinations for customers' passwords and it worked in some cases.

He said he used the money he stole to play online games and pay telephone bills.

The court found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to 39 years in jail and a fine of 17,050 baht.

The jail sentence was commuted to 20 years, suspended for three years, because of his confession and useful information he gave and because the stolen money was returned to the bank, and also to 48 hours of community service.
