Bank trio vanish with B20m from ATMs

Police are searching for three bank workers suspected of stealing almost 20 million baht destined for Krung Thai Bank ATMs in this northeastern province.

Thawatchai Samranbamrung, Sompote Singsom and Surasak Prasertsank, employees of the bank subsidiary KTB General Services (KTBGS), are wanted on embezzlement and theft charges.

KTBGS representative Wanchai Srikungtong filed a formal complaint with police in Muang district on Saturday.

Krung Thai Bank reported earlier that 19.7 million baht in cash was missing as it could not be found in transaction records of the 17 ATMs in the municipality between Monday and Friday.

Noppadol Petsuth, superintendent of the Muang district police station, said that KTBGS suspected the three men who had been assigned by its Khon Kaen branch on those days to deliver the money to supply the ATMs. They have not been seen since the irregularity was detected, he said.

Khon Kaen police have alerted Provincial Police Region 4 authorities responsible for the northeastern region to locate the trio.

Pol Col Noppadol said the latest information indicated that the men were in Nong Khai province and might be attempting to cross the Mekong River to Laos with the money.

Bank worker wanted for ATM theft caught

One of the three employees of the Khon Kaen branch of KTB General Services (KTBGS), wanted over the theft of almost 20 million baht destined for Krung Thai Bank's automatic teller machines in the northeastern province has been arrested, police said.

Pol Col Noppadol Phetsut, the Muang district police chief, said Sompote Phosom fled across the border through the Nong Khai immigration checkpoint. With cooperation from Lao police, Mr Sompote was detained and sent back to Khon Kaen on Saturday night.

His two alleged accomplices, Thawatchai Samranbamrung and Surasak Prasertsang, are still at large.

The three men were assigned to deliver 19.7 million baht in cash to supply Krung Thai Bank's ATMs in the Khon Kaen municipality between Monday and Friday.

The bank filed a complaint with police on Saturday after finding that the money was missing as it could not be found in the transaction records of 17 ATMs in the service area, and the three men had disappeared.

According to Pol Col Noppadol, Mr Sompote accused several other people, most of them KTBGS employees, of taking part in the theft.

Police had seized the van used to deliver the money for examination and asked KTBGS to bring other alleged accomplices in for questioning.

Photographs of Mr Thawatchai and Mr Surasak have been sent to all police stations and immigration checkpoints to help intercept them, Pol Col Noppadol said.

Anyone who goes to a psychiatrist should have his head examined.
