Howdy!!
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:06:44 AM »
Greetings to all from the Endless mountains of NE Pennsylvania. I am new to forums in general but have much to ask about Thailand and hopefully someday will have much to contribute. Everyone here seems friendly, knowledgeable and from what I've seen, willing to help, and with a great sense of humor, (love the joke thread). I plan to retire in Isaan, near Bua Yai, but that is still a few years away.

Welcome Smitty.

Ask away!

What's your connection with Thailand and, in particular, Bua Yai?

Thanks for the welcome.
Girlfriend and her family live in a village just outside Bua Yai. I've been over twice. Love the country, Love the Life. I will return when work slows, typically after new years and then it starts back up near June.
gf is coming over in November for 90 days. I had seen somewhere a link or reference to insurance brokers? I will need to get travel insurance (medical) for her stay. Also want to inquire about home, health, etc. for my retirement. Can't find that link now.

Hi Smitty, and welcome to the forum.

On the subject of medical insurance, I need to look into medical insurance when I return from the UK in September (I have been covered by a variety of travel policies until now - and that is always a temporary solution!).  I seem to remember Saf listing a broker in BKK somewhere in the past, but I can't seem to find it now...or can this be arranged through the hospital direct?

Thanks for the welcome takeitor,

my travel insurance company won't insure Thai residents traveling to the US. I would like to find a good broker in Thailand that can provide all of my insurance needs. I'm quite certain that there is one somewhere just dying to do that for me

Cheers Saf,

Much appreciated.  Although you can get most prescription drugs over the counter here when necessary, it's always best to be covered in case of something more serious!

Sure. If you live here you should allow for the expensive unexpected. If you leave it until you're in your sixties to buy health insurance you may be disappointed.

Welcome to the forum, Smitty.  Boom-shaka-laka. You have certainly joined a fine forum.

On the subject of medical insurance....Here in the LOS medical insurance is more like "catastrophe" insurance.  In other words, if you've been diagnosed with a terminal illness they will pay you off rather than go through the lengthy process of having to pay for treatments.  It's less paper work for them.  An HIV test is mandatory before buying health insurance here, which would probably disqualify the majority of English teachers residing in Korat.  Once you hit the age of 60 it will be very difficult to find an insurance company that will give you a policy.

I know a man who made the mistake of waiting too long before he reached the ripe age.  In the meantime he banged the love garden whores, sometimes engaging in an "Isaan sandwich" without a condom, so to speak.  He's infected not only himself, but his wife too.  When approached to buy health insurance and the HIV test requirement, he declined.

Sorry, I made a mistake.  The age limit is 65 not 60.  My bad.  BTW, this foreigner I mentioned continues to bang the whores at the love garden without protection, so if any of the folks out there fancy those cheap whores around the Yamo park, you better make sure to wear your party hat.  Reminds me of the story about the one legged German who was doing the same thing in Chaiyaphum.  Hey, isn't Uncle SomchaiAlfie and ThaiphoonAlfie from Chaiyaphum?
