Hi guys,I'm dunno!
« on: March 20, 2013, 09:29:05 AM »
Making a long story short:I'm staying with my girlfriend in Korat.Don't know for how long yet.Still checking how to go on with my life, now in retirement.I keep looking up this forum and some others regularly for keeping myself update.Sorry,I might be a bit of a bore and not post much comments myself. But can I ask some questions, like where I can meet some decent people for conversations other than football and their seemingly boring forum.I had been at a farang bar not long ago and all they could talk about was what nonsense or attacks people posted on their forum.I'm in a bit of shock, have never seen people so limited in their life.Is that how you become when you live here for a while?

Best wishes

Hi dunno,

welcome to our forum!

As to your question, whether people change, once they're here, I would say yes, they do after a while, not having a wide selection of activities for foreigners. We're in the bushes of Isaan, no matter how grey and plastered Korat appears.

A decent place where to meet foreigners with style I cannot recommend you. You should look for private acquaintances, like friends of friends etc. Classy meeting places of farangs in Korat I have not heard of. There are some good western restaurants, but they're not the typical meeting points.

 :cheers

Welcome, Dunno.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. That's one purpose of this forum and you won't find members here putting you down because you're a newbie in town.

I don't know of any meeting places in town where the customers are not as you describe. I prefer to live some distance away where the air is cleaner, traffic is lighter and expats. stay sane for longer.

Once you get to know one expat. that you like, others will come along.

Thanks guys!I'm sure your right.Just didn't think it so darn difficult here.I see a lot of people,I also talk with a lot of people.Probably I got the retirement blues.Still takes time to get used to not having the office crowd around me,apart from being in another part of the world.I longed for this since decades and now I have problems handling it. Sorry to bother you!

Can't your girlfriend help, dunno? Doesn't she have any cousins or friends who are married to farangs? I, for example, got to know lots of decent farangs through my wife's family or other Thais in the village, people you'd never see near one of these watering-holes, independent and self-secure men.

Hi dunno, welcome to Korat.  Do not worry if you cannot find what you are looking for in the Farang bars. Outside of these places, look and ye shall find.

Welcome to Korat dunno. I'm pretty sure I know which bar you're talking about which is why I don't go into places like that.  I very rarely go out and when I do, I never hear talk of forums, footie, latest gossip, and the rest of the nonsense as you described.  As far as meeting people, some of the nicest people I've met have been through mutual friends and even folks that I've struck up conversations with while out shopping at places like The Mall.

Good morning guys,Thanks for the many questions.I will try to answer them.

Hi thaiga, maybe I shouldn't burn bridges yet by revealing too many details of what I experienced during my visit at that farang bar.So just,I was flattered to see people trying to "recruit" me for a forum in a bar.I do read many forums, and when I feel discussions there will be interesting and constructive I join.As I said,I found it flattering to have guys there pretty obtrusively attempting to "recruit" me to their "only good and most used forum by expats here".Like there were no choices, and I wouldn't have that choice. It kept me from posting on any of these forums first.

And I don't want to say anything about that bar, since at least Baby Farts seems to know it and can imagine what I experienced.

Hi Roger,no it wasn't HMRC,but an export import company spread out all over the globe.I was lucky and getting around, they sent me to work in other offices from time to time.In every one of those cities,be it Brussels,New York,Copenhagen etc their office was in a business district with bistros, coffee shops and bars frequented by office workers. You could drink coffee, read newspaper, play chess etc, there was always somebody you could communicate with on a sophisticated level. That's what I mean by the office crowd.Every big city has a quarter like that.Isn't there one in Korat?I would also enjoy meeting Thais, who I think aren't any different from us on that level. In Bangkok around Silom and Sukhumvit I found plenty of that. Why not in Korat?

Best wishes

The office crowd is, sadly, short in numbers in Korat.

My own circle out here is capable of intelligent conversation when we feel like it. Otherwise we enjoy being boys again. Retired folk don't always want serious chat.

Good morning to you too, dunno.

I'm actually a bit surprised that people are trying to recruit people in bars to join a forum that they "think" in their minds is the best and "only" forum in Korat.  Hilarious.  Next time they say that to you ask them to explain to you why they "think" it is the best forum giving specific reasons and examples and also if they are sure that there aren't any other forums in Korat.  When people make statements like the ones you mentioned it means the "best" and only within their inner circle of people they perceive as friends and members because the web stats clearly don't reflect it, and if you were to ask around you'd certainly get a different answer from other people.  Saying a certain forum is the best is an opinion, unfortunately some of the working and non-working class here don't seem to understand that.

No,Baby Farts,I wouldn't let myself get involved into a forum war.I don't care whether they like their forum and think it best. But I wonder about guys walking up to a total stranger and talking his head dizzy about their forum. The internet and forums are an increasingly often used tool for communication. But I wouldn't let them take over my life.I prefer to be open to all sides and all ways of communication.

Maybe you just met people who are connected to their friends via a forum, dunno. Just look at all those who can't stay away from Facebook anymore! Forums are social media like Facebook. Out here the internet-based social media play a very big role, since we very often live far from each other. You said you lived in crowded cities before. Korat is not the city where most of us live; it is dirty, unhealthy and has no attractions.  Most of us live in the villages and suburbs spread far apart. Some go to town for a drink once in a while. Of course then they're happy meeting the guys they usually just communicate with over forums and chat enthusiasticaly about things. And of course then they do gossip a little person to person what they can't post on the forum. That's just natural. You will get used to people not living under the same circumstances as you're used to. Give it some time!

 :cheers

Perhaps your right,Johnnie, and i expected to escape conditions I deemed negative, expecting to find only conditions positive where I run to.I was expecting Korat to be a city surrounded by province, still pulsating like a big city, but it's only a market town in the province.Sorry,my error!

Dunno. I think a lot of Guys make that mistake coming to Thailand. Thailand has it's own problems and also, we bring our own with us.
I don't think your description of Korat is very accurate - there is a great life to be had here. If you want to go for it. Take some time.

Right now I think I should be catching an earlier flight back to Europe to get some fresh air for clear thoughts. As the time of my projected return is getting nearer,I'm getting pushed more into concessions and things I want to think about completely alone with a clear mind.Sorry,if I appeared whiny, but I seem to have run into some 'domestic' problems as well.I was promised a vacation without any engagement, before I came here, just room and board.I don't think I was stingy and bought lots of things more. Probably too much already.Never mind!I better take a 'break' back in Europe.

Good Morning dunno.  Hey, no need to leave so soon.  How about doing some touring around Thailand?  Check out some of the other places.  Korat is a boring city with not a lot to do here.  Why do you think you see so many people in the bars all the time?  There are some things to do here, but they are probably not much compared to where you come from.  I come from a beautiful place with beaches, mountains, excellent night life, etc, so for me Korat is dull and boring, but for others it may be exciting for them and that's okay. I have a beautiful family which occupies a lot of time.  I also love to bike, which is what I do when I want to clear my thoughts. There are some places nearby that you can go to to clear your thoughts and have some peace.  Lake Sappadoo, around 20 minutes from here in Sikhui is one of them.  I also enjoy Wang Nam Kieow which is just past Pak Thing Chai.  Personally, I prefer Khon Kaen because it is more modern than Korat and has an airport.  It's centrally located.

I don't know about finding fresh air in Korat, but there are some places you can go to clear your thoughts.

Cheers

BF.

Hey BF. Korat is not boring, lots to do. But it's not BKK, Pattaya or Phuket !
Korat is a bit short on natural beauty though. Landscape wise.
When I visit the City during the daytime, the bars often have only a few folks around but I guess the evenings are more lively.
Good luck to Dunno !
