...to all my fellow expats out in Isaan.
Where's the place for foreigners to drink these days? I understand some of my old haunts from 5+ years ago have closed. I hope the mall bar is still open, perfect retreat whilst the wife is shopping and practising her Thai.
Let me know and hopefully some of us can catch up for a Beer Chang!

Hello Jan, welcome to our forum!

As to the place to drink we're not as limited as many parts of the US where you're not allowed to hold a beer in public: So just get your drink from the supermarket and look for some people to talk to while sipping. When they're not stuck behind the PCs "making their points", i. e. scoring points they're usually communicating friendly and don't need a bartender.

Bars and restaurants specializing on getting foreigner's pennies don't seem to last long anymore. The exchange rates..

Are the bars really that short lived these days? I thought the town would follow Udon's lead and have quite a small but vibrant foreigner community.

Hi Jan, a (late) welcome from me too.

I know a couple of guys who left for Udon due to the atmosphere in Korat. They went to live there and enjoy. Many over here still dream of making money. Well, and communication took a turn for the worse with the introduction of internet forums on a local base four years ago. 

We could use a few more residents to live and enjoy - and not just godsend businessmen and teachers. The life as an alcoholic could be much easier then.
