James Joyce - Ulysses
« on: March 08, 2014, 03:38:49 PM »
I am one who loves to read and I always have a book at hand.  Thanks to technology my reading is now exclusively via my trusty Kindle.

James Joyce’s Ulysses always seems to be at or near the top of any best of book list, and as a result I have finally decided to tackle it.  I am now about 25% through the book and while it is not a particularly difficult read, I have yet to be put under its spell.

Any advice or opinion here?  Saf?

Al, I'm sorry to say that I'm not familiar with the works of Joyce. Habe you come to this bit yet:

“The sea, the snotgreen sea, the scrotumtightening sea.”

When I tried to sign up for Amazon ebooks I received a message to tell me that it wasn't available for customers in Thailand. Did you sign up in the US, AL

I think Joyce sounds a bit high brow for me Al. I recently read 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' by Ernest Hemingway. Found it very hard work indeed and written in a strange way. I have got a copy of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' though !!!
I'm interested that your Kindle works here. ATB

Wow, sorry to hear about your Kindle challenges.  I am a long time Kindle user and I did sign up originally in the US.  With that in mind, it works here exactly the same as in the states, and like in the states my books are on my Kindle in a matter of a couple of minutes or so.

I guess Amazon is assuming you're still in the States, Al.

Saf, I have not come across the line you quoted but did just read the following -

"Sumptuous and stagnant exaggeration of murder."

I was impressed.
