Why can't I speak Thai?

I've been here seven years now. I started studying Thai in the mid 90s when I decided I'd like to retire here. I've been through Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, Becker, High Speed Thai and many other self-study courses. After all that time, money and effort I still don't understand a bit of spoken Thai and have difficulty with something as simple as making a purchase at a minimart.

How about you? To what do you attribute your success or failure at learning to converse in Thai?

The answer is simple.  Your Mrs doesn't want you to learn Thai.  Ironic isn't is considering who her employer is and what she does there.  There is an old saying in Thai, "Farang roo mak, mai dee." That means the foreigner who knows too much is not good.

If you want to learn to speak Thai, stop thinking like a farang when you open your pie hole.  The language is quite easy as the grammar is pretty simple.  It's all about vocabulary and the tones.  I'm surprised that someone living here as long as you claim can't even distinguish the different tones, which by the way can totally change the meaning of a word.  Seriously though, take out a map of the world and draw a circle around all the countries that use English and a square around all the countries that use Thai.  Which language do you think is essential?

Tell the wife that every other day you will speak Thai with her.  One day on one day off.  God gave you these two things called, "ears"  use them. When you are in a situation such as ordering food in a restaurant, try and think about what vocabulary will be used.  What is the waitress going to say to you first?  "Would you like a drink?"  Dum arai Kah?  and then what, Ja lap arai dee kah?  What would you like to eat?  You can almost predict what language and vocab will be used given a certain situation.

I don't understand how difficult it would be for you making a purchase at a minimart. You grab the items you want and place it on the table by the cashier while she uses the calculator to figure out the change of items that cost 80 baht and you handed her a 100 baht note. ::)  Gotta check the calculator several times just to make sure that 100 - 80 = 20.

He needs to check with Plato first.  Do you think he hates his fellow man?  Gulliver's travels comes to mind.  ;D
