BF, were you never allowed access to the member’s only section? Seems like you were denied, hence your fixation with it. How does a private area stop people posting in the public area? It doesn’t. Pretty silly if you ask me.

DD, you seem obsessed with Google rankings. Why? Is the only purpose of a forum to get a high Google ranking? To be on page one of a Google search? I can understand that for a forum that is a business with lots of advertising but not all forums have making money in mind. One of the best forums in Thailand (IMO) deliberately does not encourage Google or other bots and is happy that the bots rarely visit.

IMO the success of a forum comes from people posting regularly. For that there needs to be things to discuss or comment on and members who want to post and are happy to post and discuss it and with the other members. So there has to be a connection between the members’ interests and the topics. It’s not only about content (ie static content). Look at korat-info English – lots of stuff copied from various newspapers, so lots of static content, but virtually nobody commenting on it or discussing it. That forum is not a success IMO. Of course there are other factors too that can help (or not) in the success of a forum.

The Google search rankings I also think are of rather high importance. Not only for commercial success but especially for gaining new members, getting fresh wind into the forum. The people who only get to a forum when invited or upon recommendation by friends are rarely the ones who sign up with self-determination and great interest; are they strong enough to help carrying a forum forth? Forums stagnating due to all posting coming from the same attitudes or just the interest to be noticed as still present aren't very interesting and useful to read IMO.

I think it will take a lot more forum ventures for people to finally find the ones they feel comfortable with. Too many different interests have to be combined to serve all.

The search engines are the most important things out there, lets say koratfarang stuck a link to here on his website, all that will achieve is diluting his members and posts and achieve very little for this forum.
Every month there are 75,000 searches on google for the word "korat", same for the word "nakhon racthasima", that traffic has to go some where, most of them will click on one of the 10 in the first page, if you are not in amongst that 10 then you aint going to be clicked, if you aint getting the clicks then its best just to close down and do something else.

I think everyone now knows who BF is and as I understand it he did have access to the private section on grumpy but was banned for certain indiscretions. I cannot understand DD's comments because as their is no fees to pay to be a member of these forums, why wish them harm. It seems to me that their is a personality conflict between some of the posters on this thread and SAF. To gain access to the members bar all you have to do is be a sensible and responsible member of the forum. It is not a secret society, Saf created this section so that members could have livelier discussions etc. which could not be seen by guests.
All members of grumpy were initially given automatic access to this bar, but after the recent upheavals of stolen identities and passwords Saf decided to screen members before they had access to this section to protect the members.

Geordie, who I am and why my access was removed is irrelevant to this discussion, but since you insist, let me share with you a few things you are obviously unaware of.  I created this thread BEFORE I even knew I was banned.  In fact, if it weren't for the fact that the owner openly posted it here, I would have never known. I can't even remember the PW for that account.  That's how long it's been.  My OPINION was that creating a private section kills a forum.  You don't have to agree with me and I don't give a darn if anyone does or does not.  However, the owner of grumpy used to constantly complain about KF having a private section.  So he goes and does the same thing.  That's perfectly fine because it's HIS forum and he can do what he wants.  I think of it as a childhood virtual clubhouse, kind of like a clubhouse you might have had when you were a kid.  Only a "select" few from the neighborhood where allowed passage.  I remember the discussions when I used to be a member, and although some were entertaining (my favorite being "Ask Alfie") there really wasn't anything that more interesting that couldn't be posted in a public section or on any other forum.

Can I ask to spare us the details of every topic and post at another forum please?

I think we do know by now.  ;)

As I have already stated BF you are attacking Saf & Grumpy for personal reasons which is relevant to this thread.

We got quite a few constructive and interesting posts on this thread. That's what matters! What impulse might have started this thread isn't relevant either IMO.

Can we lay this topic to rest now? 8)

Not sure what brought me to this thread, but I clicked the link for grumpyexpat, as far as I can tell there hasn't been a post this month, maybe I am missing something completely or grumpyexpat is indeed dead.

saf, grumpy's admin, hasn't even logged in here for two weeks. He's busy reporting (?) about a swingers club in Korat on the other forum. Doing all the research etc. he probably doesn't have any time left.

A swingers club in Korat? Who would have thought all you old buggers would be into that sort of thing, is it any good?

I look in every day and am logged in now!

There are demands on my time at the moment so I haven't had chance to post much here or on the Grumpy public forum. I thought that, as a friendly gesture, I might help KF along with a few bits of subtle humour as an alternative to the more obvious jokes.

You can imagine what the swings look like! There is a similar thread on Grumpy.
