Email hunters???
« on: March 26, 2009, 03:11:56 PM »
I wonder why an information site requires you to register and confirm your email address by clicking a link sent there:

Quote
You must register to have access to all pages and all menus. If not, you won't see much.

What secrets will you be told once you submitted and verified your email address? Does it make sense to have a simple user of an information site without any opportunity to post on a forum etc. to not only register and submit an email address but also to confirm it, to prove that it is correct?  ???

What else could be the purpose but trying to get addresses to sell to spammers??? Or is that merely to send you a free map once in a while?  ;D

And now they're even getting fussy about which email provider you use!

YOU MUST REGISTER to have access to most of the functions. It's free but hotmail accounts might be blocked.

Are hotmail accounts 'too secure' nowadays?  :D

Or is it because Microsoft isn't one of the sponsors of the website like Yahoo or Google are?  ::)

And despite the name of the site, you can't even see a map without logging in!! Weird!!

It's called the rationality of irrationality! :o

Hotmail accounts (from Microsoft Corporation) cannot be connected to MS Outlook (from Microsoft Corporation) without having "Outlook connector" installed and managed to bring to function. I don't consider myself very stupid, but that is something I couldn't manage. So I have to say THANKS to the guy who keeps me from using Hotmail.  ;)

Anyway  I found individual domains for email much classier. How do you get one without having to pay to Yahoo or Microsoft? As simple as that: go to http://co.cc and open a free account for a domain, register a free domain like "koratfart.co.cc". Set up your domain checking Google Apps Email Setup near the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. Then have fun with the 200 free email accounts you'll get on Google. They're like Gmail with 7GB storage etc. but with your own domain you chose.

Microsoft offers a similar service for having 500 free email accounts on Hotmail which just aren't called "***@hotmail.com". Little more difficult than just checking a box at co.cc but not unmanageable at all. You don't need to be a lawyer for that.  ;)

But I'm sure JOOMLA like every other content management system has a button where you can adjust which email domains are blocked. That administrator just doesn't seem to have found it.  ;)

Thanks for the info on domains, Koratfart. Very useful. But I still don't understand why some people feel it's necessary to use MS Outlook when they want to use Hotmail email accounts. It's not necessary at all. I know some people prefer to prepare their messages offline then go online to send them. But they can do that by preparing their messages in a word document instead of "Outlook." Then connect, copy and paste, and send as before. Or have I missed something?

Or have I missed something?

Life in the Korat web with the banning policies of tv and kf make it necessary to have more than one email address. You can only register anew, if you also have a new email address. And you can only register with multiple nicks, if you have a different email address for every registration. So you keep accumulating email addresses you actually use by the time.

Being present on the same board with multiple nicks you still want to be able to receive notices of PMs people might have sent to one of your personalities. Check each email account periodically for that? Yes, you can do that yourself -or you let an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird etc. do that for you and collect all the mail on your PC where you can sort it into your archive by topics or senders without regard from where or to where the mail was sent.

Ok, there is also the option to let each email account forward your mail automatically to just one account which you keep controlling via a messenger. But if you want to answer to one of those mails to another email address you gotta do it from that address - or from an email client, where you just select from a dropdown menu which account your letter is to be sent from.

In addition to your archive on your PC you can keep copies of your mail at gmail, yahoo.com etc. in case of a computer crash with losses. Email clients like Outlook help save you a lot of time for opening your web mail accounts and are faster to open each mail and easier to arrange. It's a big step ahead on the slow internet in the bushes in Isaan. ;D

Wow, you tempted me to have a look at that site. And what do I see? Info about a new restaurant in Korat! As precise as a "koratmap" can be is the description of the location: "They are located near the intersection beside Condoms and Cabbage. It's a small place before the Esso gas station if you come from the center of Korat." Neither street nor direction, just "near the intersection beside Condoms and Cabbage". So, if I'm gonna try to find it I'll just ask people: "Where is Condoms, and where is cabbage?" After they recovered from the shock of my impertinence to ask about condoms, they might point at the next pharmacy. "No", I reply, "not for sex, for eat. Where is cabbage?" I can see their brains working again, finally lighting up with a smile. Then they point in the direction of the next market. "No, not vegetables! Farang!" I can see their brains working again, slowly wondering what idiot I must be. Then a little girl says to me in broken english: "Oh, farang vegitables! Comdom? Maybe dotcom?" Before I can reply or ask any further she takes me by the hand and leads me to an internet cafe, typing "koratfarang.com" into a PC there. I'm about to loose my temper for all those Koratians not knowing what place li'l Sebbie meant. I'm in need of a real map! ::)

And even the name is wrong - it should be "Cabbages and Condoms".

No map, very poor directions and the wrong name given for a restaurant! There must be something good about the website but admin is making it painfully difficult to find!

Sorry to shake you awake a little, but co.cc domains are only free for the first year according to their FAQs:

Quote
1. Can I use my free domain forever? See Answer

No, the free domain is available for only first year.
If you want to keep the free domain after a year, you should pay for it.

It's not clear that you really do have to pay after the first year. Probably depends on how business is developing. But you should be prepared that it might cost you. How much isn't clear yet. It's completely new in their TOS. ::)

Ouch, didn't say that when I signed up!

I'll keep my eyes open for an alternative. Don't want to get this site here anywhere near costing money. So nothing is lost, if it doesn't develop very useful. :o

Thanks, roger rabbit!

Naw, it isn't the $ 2.99 they're charging now from the second year on, for one it's the problem of transfering it to them. nd for two it's the problem of distributing this financial burden evenly on the shoulders of our users, the collecting. ::)

And I got principles. If someone offers something to me for free, he cannot back out unpunished from our contract, even if he kept this option open.

Maybe we'll get a real domain after all, which isn't that much more expensive. We'll see! Got about nine more months on this.  ;)

I was wondering what you get paid on the web for an email address and a matching name for the so/called personalized advertising: 5 bucks for one is it there http://easyhotjobs.net/

All you need to do is put up some websites where people have to enter their name and email address, and then sell those for $ 5 a piece, give them to a company for spamming. But of course you gotta put up some bucks at front for those "agencies". But I'm told they really do pay out - sometimes.  :D

Monkey you are not going to get $5 per email address, if you think you can I will sell you 120,000 at 50cents a go.
