Our most favourite restaurant in the whole of Korat is the barbecue place just around the corner from The Stories. Sorry, I do not know its name but it is a huge barn of a place with a large outside area. Buckets of red hot charcoal are inserted in holes in the table (watch your knees) and the you barbecue the meat on a hot metal plate. The food is just wonderful and the cost for the whole family including beers is very reasonable. Today we had a VIP visitor from Bangkok and decided to take her to The Stories, where we have never been before. The first thing that stikes you about The Stories is the swimming pool. This very much put me in mind of a visit to The Traders Hotel in KL. They too have a swimming pool in the middle of the bar for no apparent reason. The bar has tremendous views of the twin towers but apart from that the staff are so far up themselves you can only see their toenails.
But I digress, back to The Stories. First impressions were very good, apart from the forementioned swimming pool. We ordered our food and our guest wanted some white wine(no accounting for taste). We asked for the wine list only to discover that they only had one sparkling white an a handful of reds. We were informed that they were out of stock of the white. So, we chose one of the reds. The food came and it was given a good panning by my resident Thai experts. The red was pretty dreadful, but having ordered it we felt obliged to drink it.
The clientele were about half Thai and about half advance guard of Cobra Gold. It was noticeable that a sizeable chunk of the Cobra Gold crew left at an early stage of the proceedings.
Anyway, having endured the food and the wine, we decided to stay on and wait for the band to start. Well, it definitely was'nt worth the wait. They were a Thai group and about at the same standard of the Thai food.
So I do not think we will be going there again in a hurry. Our bottle of red cost about the same as a meal plus beers for the whole family in the barbecue place next door. I think the lack of white wines on the menu is significant. Personnaly I cannot see the point of white wine and I cannot see the point of The Stories.
