The Sport Bar closed?
« Reply #30 on: January 07, 2013, 08:31:56 AM »
I've heard several stories that this place has now closed.  Another forum has made mention of it with some members expressing their thoughts on it as if it were a huge tragedy for Korat expats and threatening to boycott the place if it opens under new ownership.  Unacceptable demands for increase in rent seem to be the cause of closure.  I don't really know the owners, but I wish them the best in whatever new business adventures they decide to do.  The question is, where will people go now?   My bet is Check-Inn and the Walrus, both great places with great owners.  There is also the possibility that some might wait for the Irish pub to reopen so they can critique the glossy floors and outlay of the place.

I also wish the new owners good luck as I'm sure it's going to be a challenge of epic proportions to run a business while having a small part of the farang community boycotting the place.  ::)

It's a pity. The Sports Bar was one of the cleaner farang bars in town. I don't spend time in the city drinking holes these days but I imagine that Walrus will benefit from its closure. Others will stay locally and return to G&D and migrate to Mam's place.

Has G&D been sold yet?

I'm not sure.  True what you said about the sports bar.  Even though I have only been in there twice, the place looked top notch to me.

Really sorry to hear that the Sports Bar has closed or is changing hands.
Just in case they read KF, I'd like to say thanks to Briony and his Missis for running a good place and giving a kind welcome.
Wish them well for the next venture and the future.
No point in boycotting if Sports Bar reopens....... Dooh.

It's more likely that the owner will reopen it as a Thai restaurant. Alternatively, they already have a new tenant lined up who will pay the key money and rent that the departed tenant refused to pay.

Yes indeed the Landlady introduced a key money of 200,000 baht for a renewal of the lease which was just unacceptable. We tried to reason with her but it was apparent there was a hidden agenda. Her son is now in the process of getting the bar ready for opening. I guess it's just one of those things, you can be lucky or unlucky as a tenant. As the Guv'nor of the bar I was very lucky though. Met a lot of good people, unusual characters and had lots of fun. A big thankyou to everyone who supported us during our tenure and see you all around.

Cheers
Briany & Kaew.

Hi Briany and thanks for posting the facts - which having heard......
I have changed my own mind and will not be rushing back, if at all.
IMHO your ex Landlady will find it hard to recover her previous income from this site because there are good places to go in Korat.
Sincerely - Good Luck to the both of you! Thanks again.
Good luck with your next venture.
Roger
