Hi guys,

my mate and me will be touring through Isaan soon. Korat will be one of the stops. What hotels in the city centre can you recommend to a medium budget traveller? Air condition is not absolutely necessary. Close to the city centre and public transportation like a bus stop with local busses going in more than one direction would be fine. It doesn't need to be directly at a railroad station or big bus terminal. Once we arrived we don't want to go only to the hotel but be able to ride around the city exploring not only the tourist attractions but also what isn' recommended in every tourist guide but still worth seeing like the markets and manufacturing of local goods. We're told silk and pottery factories are woth paying a visit to in Korat.

Hi Michael.

There are many to choose from and the rates can vary. You probably want to spend some time in the old part of town. It shows up on maps as a tight grid system of roads. I have very little experience of the hotels there but I'm sure that other posters have.

My preference, if I were to stay in Korat would be a couple of places just away from the centre. Sabai Hotel and Raya Grand. Just a tuk tuk ride away from the old town.

If you want to meet up with some decent farang residents while you're in town, go to The Ram. It's next to Sabai Hotel and on the road behind Makro.

Sakhol Hotel on Atsadang just opposite Bangkok Bank is where some of my friends stay again and again. It's very close to Thao Suranaree Monument (Yamo), the major tourist attraction of Korat. Local bus lines in all directions are just a few meters in front and behind the hotel. Lak Muang, the city pillar, Wat Pranarai, the royal temple, and Night Bazar are also just a little walk.

Mike. The SIRI hotel is probably the best bang for the buck. The hotel was recently renovated. The rooms aren't that big, but you can expect a clean place with a/c for a minimal price. The last time I checked, the cost for a room was around 400 baht.

yeah michael, the tourist information office near the sima thani hotel.

If you can find koratfart.com I'm sure you can also find the Sakhol Hotel and Siri Hotel on the internet. The Siri has it's own website: www.sirihotelkorat.com, (shows some tourist destinations too) it's also shown on mapguidethailand.com.
Google maps will show you korat city and so will http://map.longdo.com/?locale=en. Google earth will give you a nice view of the city too.

for a touring adventure, take local transportation so you can really get a feel for the locals and locality. Ask a taxi driver to take you around - off the beaten track. Hire a bicycle, drive your car, walk, ride a motorbike and explore. There are lots of markets, you won't have time to see them all. You can see shoe menders working live from the front of their houses, and many other things. I won't tell you all, i don't want to spoil your tour by telling you too much.

Michael theres a alternative if not wanting to go to tourist info etc, though be careful this website has some nasty spyware, it has a link here, be careful whos spying on you because they may want to know who you are, then again they may be spying on themselves.

Much better and more accurate than any map is the Google Earth satellite image of Korat. It is of very high resolution and has been updated recently. If you have Google Earth installed on your computer just click those links to the placemarks:

Thanks, guys! Comparing the locations of the hotels all on one page at the same time is very helpful in planning. I'll probably stay in the center where Google shows all those tourist uploads.

Probably we'll be taking the train from Ayuttaya. Never heard of Loso. Are they good? If they play around the end of November we might visit a concert. How often do they play there?

Im interested in info re a good ( 3star or better) hotel hopefully with a pool etc...as close as possible to the entertainment / nightlife area.....which from what I read here is fairly well concentrated in a particular area.

Any advice re the room rates would also be great
