NAKHON RATCHASIMA -- Two young men were arrested in Khon Buri district early on Tuesday with an AK-47 machine pistol they claimed to have bought from a Facebook "friend" and were trying to resell.

Pol Capt Kwanmuang Kosuma, the Khon Buri police chief, said the two - Jirawat Longkrathok, 18, and Napasdol Laikrathok, 19 - were apprehended on a road in Pai Ubon village of tambon Lam Phiak while  travelling on a motorcycle.

Police found in their possession an AK-47, a military-grade weapon civilians are not allowed to own, and two rounds of ammunition.

Mr Jirawat said he bought the firearm from a Facebook "friend", whose real identity was not known, who offered to sell it for 10,000 baht, police said.

He transferred the money  via an ATM and the weapon was delivered by post nearly three months ago.

The young man said he bought the gun because it was cheap, not knowing that it was illegal. When a friend told him he could be heavily punished if caught with it, he tried to sell it, offering it to people in the village. Then he was arrested.

Police were not convinced he was telling the truth. Both young men were detained for further questioning. They were initially charged with illegal possession and carrying the weapon in public without a permit.
