Court upholds sentences for ex-MPs

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the lower courts' sentences on Suporn Atthawong, a United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship leader and former Thai Rak Thai MP for Nakhon Ratchasima, and Theerachai Saenkaew, a former Thai Rak Thai MP for Udon Thani and former deputy agriculture minister.

The two were found guilty of defaming Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva by saying at a press conference in May 2002 that Mr Abhisit had made a false assets declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Criminal Court and Appeals Court had earlier sentenced Mr Suporn to one year in jail and a fine of 20,000 baht and Mr Theerachai to six months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht.

The jail sentences were suspended for two years.

The Supreme Court today read its verdict upholding the sentences, in the absence of the two men.
