Temple building in Korat destroyed by fire

Fire gutted a two-storey building in Wat Ban Cheewuek temple in Kham Sakae Saeng district of this northeastern province early Sunday, causing about 5 million baht damage.

Police said that all 10 monks were out collecting alms in the morning when the fire broke out at about 6.30am at the building which housed an dining hall and sleeping quarters.

Prathuang Srihaboonthan, president of the Cheewuek tambon administration organisation (TAO), on being informed of the fire, called in five fire engines from all five TAOs in the area.

The fire was put out after about an hour, but almost the entire 70-year-old wooden building was destroyed. The damage cost was estimated at 5 million baht.

A firefighter and a member of the Cheewuek TAO were injured during the firefighting operation. They were admitted to Kham Sakae Saeng Hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire. It is initially believed the fire was caused by an electrical short-circuit.
