Nature-lovers are up in arms over a concert being planned by one of the 22 resorts accused of encroaching on national forests in Wang Nam Khieo district of Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The Love Wang Nam Khieo group have sent an open letter to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dapong Ratanasuwan arguing that the concert planned for Nov 29 could be an illegal commercial activity, Thairath Online reported.

The letter was also sent  to Thirapat Prayoonsit, director-general of the Forestry Department, and Niphon Chotiban, director-general of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department.

The letter said the Phu Pha Thara resort, organiser of the "Voice of Love Music Festival", is one of the 22 resorts accused of encroaching on forest reserves, and forestry officials had filed an encroachment complaint against the owners.

The resort had promoted the concert by offerring use of a tent for two people with each ticket sold, the letter said.

The groups opposed to the concert said they did not want Wang Nam Khieo used as a venue for an activity to promote commercial tourism, and the planned concert might be illegal.

The forestry chief, Mr Thirapat, said when asked for comment that he knew only that the area for the concert is two or three kilometres from the resort. The Irrigation Department had obtained permission from the Forestry Department to use the area to build a reservoir.

He did not know if the organiser had received permission to hold the concern there from the Irrigation Department.

He knew only that the organiser had earlier sought permission from provincial authorities to organise  the concert in another area, but its request had been rejected.
