Korat 'discount festival' planned for July

A 15-day discount sale is planned by four major retailers as part of efforts cement Korat in its place as the major shopping hub for people in the Northeast.

Chatchaval Wongjon, chairman of the provincial chamber of commerce, said the “Korat Discount” festival would likely to be held in July and offer attractive discounts to shoppers at four major department stores – The Mall Korat, Terminal 21, Central Plaza and Khlung Plaza.

Hotels, restaurants, gold shops, petrol stations, hospitals, local shops and night markets would also be encouraged to offer discounts.

The chamber anticipated the event would attract spending of at least 1 billion baht during the 15 days.

He said Korat was outstanding in the region, as the province housed several large shopping malls, so Isan people did not need to travel to Bangkok to get the exact same products.

Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichien Chantaranothai said Korat city had the second largest urban population in the country at 2.63 million, and also had convenient transport connections. It was only about three hours from Bangkok by car, and the travelling time would be shortened with the completion of a new motorway and the upgraded dual-track train.

With more investment in infrastructure development, Korat had witnessed additional related investment to serve local people and visitors. The province in 2016 welcomed almost 8 million visitors, about 95% of them Thais, he said.

Rungthip Bukkhunthod, director of the provincial Tourism Authority of Thailand office, said the number of visitors to Korat had steadily increased, from 5.77 million in 2011 to 7.88 million in 2015.

The office calculated the average visitor-spending per head in 2015 at 1,217 baht, for total tourism revenue of over 15.8 billion baht.

Visitors could be divided into two general groups  -- nature adventurists, who visited Khao Yai and Thap Lan national parks, and people attending seminars and going shopping in Muang district.
