33 hurt chain-reaction bus crash

Nearly three dozen people were hurt in a chain-reaction bus crash at a police checkpoint in Nakhon Ratchasima early Tuesday.

Pol Lt Col Chamnong Saipong at Muang district police station said 33 passengers - 22 men, eight women and three children - were hurt on four buses in the 1:45am crash on Mitraparp road in near the Muen Wai intersection.

Three Bangkok-bound buses - two from Nakhon Phanom and one from Ubon Ratchathani - had stopped in a line near the intersection for a search. But a Roi-et-Bangkok tour bus rammed into the rear of the Ubon-Bangkok bus, setting off the chain reaction.

Victims were rushed to three nearby hospitals.  Most were released after receiving minor treatment.  Only four were held for observation.

Khamnueng Onsri, 44, the driver of the Roi-et bus, said he was unable to stop in time due to a late signal from the police. He was charged with reckless driving, causing injuries and property damage.

Anyone who goes to a psychiatrist should have his head examined.
