Windows update slowing the internet?
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:55:30 PM »
I got that update icon already the whole day on the taskbar. Then the computer tells me it needs to restart. Ok. But then it takes almost half an hour and the message appears that it can't configure the update and will roll back the changes. Restarts. Same game again: says it's configuring updates, then declares it a failure and rolls back the changes. My internet again is extremely slow because Windows downloads the updates again, hundreds of MB over my slow EDGE. Wants to restart. Ok. And the game keeps repeating over and over.

What went wrong with their updates? Is that a way of pushing people to buy their Windows 7?

Should imagine the windows servers are a bit busy at the moment with the release of windows 7.

If my automatic updates come in broken condition already I can imagine that Windows 7 doesn't come in much better condition and should be downloaded right now neither to avoid more grey hair.

Ain't that just what I said? They want to push the sale of their upgrades. Little problem is though as I read your old system needs to be updated to the newest for upgrading to 7. Catch-22?

I think you will find that anybody who has used say windows, mac and linux would rate windows as the crappiest, sadly too many people don't realise that there are other operating systems other than windows :(

If you're living in Korat you get Windows at every shop while for other operating systems you have to look around. Most people just use it because they're too lazy to work their head for another operating system, because they don't know where to get it.

PC stuff does seem much more plentiful than Mac. On the other hand, most of what I need these days is available as open source for moth PC and Mac so there may be no significant problem.

J, I turn off updates.  Of course MS is going to push for Windows 7.  Then, once it's installed, you can go through the same process of downloading patches, updates, security fixes all over again.  MS just can't seem to get things right the first time.  This is why I run a duel boot system windows Vista 64bit and Linux. If people took the time to learn about Linux they'd see it really is a fantastic OS.  If you're hacker it's probably the best OS to run.

If you want just about any OS, on the bottom floor of The Mall is a software shop called, Penguin.  They have everything you need. They'll even give you a vip card.  Buy 10 of their CD's and get one free.  :D

Johnnie.  After my trip to the zoo, I swung by The Mall to grab a copy of windows 7 64bit Ultimate edition.  My second PC runs vista 64 bit.  It upgraded and installed flawlessly. It runs like a Ferrari.  I am actually impressed with this OS.  The DVD set me back 300 baht.  It comes with the 32 and 64 bit version.  I'm not a big fan of upgrades.  I would still consider a fresh install.
