A friend of mine has a new smartphone and used GSM, buying so many hours use for so many Baht. Then she went to AIS 3g which was costing 200-400b a day and was pretty useless in her house. She had to go out side most of the time to make a call. Now she has gone back to GSM. Can anyone recommend an all inclusive package for internet access 24/7 each month. She has a quote now for 1,300b per month, for I think BB. This seems to me to be very expensive, but I do not have a smartphone, so really no idea.

Any advice would be appreciated such as how much per month for all access packages, with which company and if possible a contact telephone number.

Thanks.

"GSM" isn't a phone company; it stands for "Global System for Mobile Communications" and has been applied by all mobile phone operators.  Phone companies offering mobile phone access around here are AIS, DTAC, True, CAT etc. You need a SIM card from the company that serves your needs best. The availability of the signal depends upon your location, where the next transmitter is, something that might depend upon your momentary position.

Internet packages are available at various terms: monthly "unlimited" packages, weekly "unlimited" packages, daily "unlimited" packages and packages by hours or data traffic volume to be used per month. "Unlimited" has to be interpreted as use at high speed (3G 7.1 or 15.2 Mbit) until a certain data flow limit, then unlimited data flow at lower speed ( EDGE 384 Kbit or even slower).

Your friend needs to make up her mind first, which mobile phone operator to use, which SIM card to buy, and then decide about which package to settle for. Without a package she probably pays 1.5 Baht per minute internet connection or per 1MB download.

Thanks JF, you have explained it a lot clearer than I did. She is using AIS at the moment. Do you or anyone know what their unlimited montly packages cost?

Dtac is out as no signal in this part of the world.

On my wife's phone bill they show 599 Baht + VAT for the unlimited monthly package. My wife keeps complaining that connecting over AIS is extremely slow. In our house her phone (iphone5) connects to the internet via the WLan signal of my TOT-connected router and is ok (6Mbit). Everywhere else, when it needs to connect over AIS to the internet, it is a drag.

On the phone bill they split the traffic used in 3G and GPRS/EDGE. According to that bill only about 1/6 came in over 3G, nowhere near the 2GB promised, most of it was GPRS/EDGE (384KB nominal, about 120 MBit real, sometimes even slower, as GPRS nominal 64 Kbit, real next to nothing).

If your friend can get an ADSL connection to her house, it might be best to use a WLan router in the house. For use away from that she can either use the 1.5 Baht/1min-1MB option or a small package by hours or traffic.

Thanks JF, very helpful.

Thanks JF, very helpful.

Dutchy,  Unlimited only means you have connectivity.  Typically, all mobile service providers have a limit as to the amount of DATA you use.  Usually 1 gig or with some plans 2 gigs.  Once you reach that limit, your internet speed will drop significantly (edge).  Using the internet via smartphone can be VERY expensive.

If your friend is using her phone mostly at home then it would make sense to go with true internet or 3BB.

35 baht calling melody?

Instead of the signal of her phone ringing you hear some Thai song playing in a loop when you call. It's good to keep unwanted callers from bothering you, because people who call are being charged for call time already to listen to that music. ;)

It also calms people down who impatiently had to wait a long time for the phone to get answered.

They need to add a service charge for volume reduction on those melodies.  Some of them are way too loud.

399 baht Package customers are eligible to use 3G at speeds up to 42 Mbps. After reaching the limit, speeds are reduced to no more than 64 Kbps.

Good luck on getting that 42 Mbps connection shared by thousands of other users.

Nothing wrong with asking interesting questions on this forum, even if no friend or yourself are directly concerned, questions that are of concern to many of us! Take it as enrichment of the forum to have questions of general concern to expats in Korat asked and answered. That makes it easier getting along here for those who only read this forum, not wanting to ask themselves for various reasons.  :)

Yes, I did ask the question on behalf of a friend. She did indeed go for the 799b package. I do not have a phone capable of internet connection. I do have a tab, but have a GSM package, 149b per month for 50 hours. Fine for me.

I found it really confusing as an unlimited package does have limits. for the 799 package I think it is 4gb of 3g, then drops down to unlimited 2g. Seems a bit of a con to me.

Do they have the same system in the UK, whereby you get a limited amount of 3g then everything slows to 2g?

It is confusing too many different packages and promotions.

Today i bought a 3g prepay aircard from true big c, the assistant assured me i would

get 5mbps download speed even out in the sticks of isaan.

I managed to get almost 4 mbps by moving the pc around for a better connection. :)

I think true is the way to go. :cheers

My wife's friends have also advised her to change to True Move for better availability of 3G internet around here. It's a little complicated to change to another company though, if you want to keep the phone number you got for 14 years already and all the conveniences of postpaid, like getting a detailed bill, and not having to bother about paying the bill in time, as they withdraw that from our bank account two weeks after sending the bill.

I told her to get a prepaid SIM for testing first, before she goes through all that bureaucracy, to make sure it actually does work better.
