Internet and phone
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:06:15 AM »
I live near dan Kwian. I have the internet with TOT  the modem is a 'ADSL' modem. I thought that you could 'split' these modems and have a telephone as well. The technician who installed the line (whose English wasn't very good, but better than my Thai) seemed to be saying it wasn't true ADSL (SL?). The reason I wanted to use a phone line was that I have an alarm that I brought with me from Spain with a land line auto dialer and I want to use it. I also have a dual line Skype phone which would be nice to use for local calls.  Can anyone enlighten me on this subject?

Usually modems come packed with a splitter. If yours didn't have one, you can get one for about 60 Baht at most shops in IT plaza. I recommend Ratchasima IT on second floor, corner of middle row facing Mitraparp Road. They got a small shop especially for internet connection stuff, like modems, routers, cables, access points, repeaters etc. Have English-speaking personnel with knowledge and attitude to help customers, just have to fetch them from one of their other shops or the office nearby .

Works fine with my TOT connection. The line gets split before the modem. Can use the phone and the internet connection at the same time. :)

Tks Johnnie, I'm sure I've got one somewhere but I've just moved house and I can't find a thing! I asked the installer about splitting and he seemed to say it was not possible anyway I'll get one and give it a try. Whilst we are on this subject I'd like to connect the two wires of the Inet feed to a proper rj11
wall socket - do you know which two of the six I need to connect?

Sorry, don't know, never bothered to find out. My TOT mechanics have learned to happily do that for me. ;D

Tks Thaiga, Useful link - I insisted they used cat 5e and not phone cable. (I had previously laid both to my wall outlets). They didn't want to but in the end they did. The link you have given me includes wiring for cat 5e also. so tks again.
