100,000 net access points by end of month
« on: August 05, 2012, 12:24:42 PM »
The Information and Communica-tions Technology Ministry will expand its free Wi-Fi project to 100,000 access points countrywide by the end of this month, ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap said yesterday.

He said in the government's weekly TV programme "Yingluck Government Meets the People" that 10,000 access points had been made available across the nation already.

Up to 250,000 access points will be available by the first or second quarter of next year. The speed at each point was around 2 megabits per second, Anudith added.

Before the government's policy to promote equal Internet broadband access among Thais, only 12 per cent of Thai people had access to the Internet. After the policy was launched, 30 per cent or 20 million people could access the Internet as private and state enterprise sectors have expanded the Internet network and the government targeted to increase the figure to 80 per cent in 2015, according to him.

He added that the project was helping prepare infrastructure in the country in preparation for the Asean Economic Community. Anudith also invited Thai people to try high-speed Internet. He urged them to search for "ICT Free Hotspot" and sign in with their names and ID card numbers to obtain passwords for Internet use.

Name, surname, and ID card number are required. They are allowed to access the Internet for two hours at a time at an average speed of 2 Mbps. They should look for the logo SMART-WiFi@TH in the free WiFi areas.
