Where's this all going to lead?
« on: June 06, 2009, 02:08:46 AM »
So Koratfart, where is this forum world of yours going to lead to?
At present this board really has nothing going for it at all, ie content wise for search engines, member wise and just about every thing else you can think of.
So what are your plans? I know you have invested heavily into a domain name all of your own, but where do you see it going? Are you willing to invest the time it takes to make a good forum?
If you are interested in running a reasonably successfull forum then I do have a couple of ideas, 1 of which might actually make a bit of money but would mean another investment of 10 dollars, it all depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it, if it aint a lot of time and effort your willing to put into it then there is no point in me giving you the ideas is there :) so tell us your plans.

"It ain't the size that matters."

You know what the biggest problem is? The relativity of the term "good forum". Good for whom and good for what?

If you are interested in running a reasonably successfull forum then I do have a couple of ideas, 1 of which might actually make a bit of money but would mean another investment of 10 dollars, it all depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it, if it aint a lot of time and effort your willing to put into it then there is no point in me giving you the ideas is there :) so tell us your plans.

Don't let anybody keep you from running your suggestions and business ideas here. ;)

btw I'm aware of this time of year being "dry forums time"  8)

dry forums time? Never heard that phrase before nor experienced it, everyday new people join the internet, 10 million people visit Thailand each year? 10 million more are interested in visiting Thailand each year? Thats a lot of people looking for info about Thailand, if that info is not on your site then your site is not going to turn up in their searches, a proper forum will not experience "Dry Forum Time" unless it has reached the peak, ie every search comes to them, Chiang Mai searches there are 2 million per month alone on google, Chiang Mai is some little tourist town say when compared to Phuket, how many millions of Thailand searches are there everyday about Thailand?
A good forum should never see downturn in traffic, that is what a good forum is.

Actually lets go into this a bit deeper, forums have dynamic pages where websites have static pages, most websites their content is done by *professionals* so they will get traffic, ie good content, good keywords etc etc.
Forums anybody can post on, so lets start a thread, now this thread may get 30 posts on it, but it will never do well in traffic as it has nothing of value.

Maybe not where you think, george!

Surely everybody agrees on the traffic part. But is traffic synonym to posting? A good forum doesn't get stuffed with nonsense posts every day. Doing that appears like going out in front of your house every day yelling to all your neighbors: "I'm still alive physically! I can open my mouth and yell." - Does it make them think: "Boy, this guys gotta have something to say!" - Or do they understand: "That guy's lost his mind already!" ;D

So we agree post quantity is pretty irrelevant, stickman does one new post every week on his site, yet gets 30 to 40,000 visitors per week.

So Mr Fart, where is all this going? You have invested heavily into your new domain name, do you want this to be the most successful Korat forum or is it just for a bit of fun? Obviously to make it successful does involve work like most things in life, are you willing to put that work into it?
If you are I have a couple of other tips you might like, sadly they also involve work.

60,000 searches on google last month for Korat and 18,000 for nakhon ratchasima, add in stuff like korat hotels etc and you got to reckon a potential max of 130,000 visitors per month, how many would you be happy with?

Lets start with the forum home page, now you do realise that it is a web page I take it, have you ever googled and found a web page on korat this crap before? And no I don't mean other Korat forums as they are all crap, so why is it when you google say korat tourist attractions you find a nice web site and not some crappy forum in Korat? It's because of words, take a look at your forum titles and descriptions, look at each one seperately, not one of them would attract a visit from google, so, you need to think about forum structure and forum titles and forum descriptions, this is your main web page for now.

Now most of those forums can be condensed into just 1 or 2 forums, unimportant stuff for search engines chuck down the bottom, new more relevant forums aimed at korat need to be made, the number of forums is about right for now, so basically you need after the condensing 10 or 9 new forums, the forums all need around a 30 word description with good key word content, ie korat tour, korat tourism, korat nightlife, korat hotels, theres 120,000 searches per month out there, you aint going to get any of them without some drastic literay changes in the forum main page.

Another "tourist information site"? A site called "koratfart.com" I wouldn't expect to be good for that. Can "farts" be trusted more than "farangs"? as a source of information? But "farts" can be a lot more entertaining and influencing than any know-all farangs.  :o ;D

What did google or yahoo mean 10 years ago? Could have bought them for $10 each, whats their value now? Anyway the word Korat is in the domain name so that helps a bit.

Good morning, george,

Yahoo and Google did invest just a little bit more into their now empires than just a few bucks for a domain.

But you're right, I do consider "koratfart.com" a domain worth investing into. It's a domain name that can travel fast, a name nobody needs help spelling it. It's got some sound of spice and fun rather than boredom that needs show fighting to keep it from sinking into oblivion. It carries the meaning of freedom.

But the content of a site "koratfart.com isn't as easy to compile. As a prospective visitor to Korat I would expect some more info of the unknown sides of Korat, the dark sides, the "secrets" expressed directly or indirectly.

And it doesn't need to be number one on Google, the domain name itself is its asset. Google indexes won't be that important. It's a little like "teakdoor.com" which stands IMO for what's hidden behind that expensive and exclusive door and makes people curious to open it.
Fun is the one thing that money can't buy

Sadly you are not going to win international acclaim by having the word korat in your domain name, let alone acclaim from Korat itself, if I google "Korat" I get over a million choices.
 ผลการค้นหา1-10จากประมาณ1,140,000สำหรับkorat
What will make people visit your site when it is page 200 on google or where ever it maybe, most sites the traffic comes in on search engines, google being the most used, ie 70 percent of traffic to a site could be coming from google, one of the main searches for korat is "Korat Hotels" I don't think you even have those words on your site.

Have a look here http://alexa.com/siteinfo/teakdoor.com click on clickstream, it gives a rough idea of how people get to a site and where they go afterwards.

Well done, you have made a start, I would have put a bit more thought and research into the main domain description "Ratchasima's", do people use these when searching ' would singular work better?

Now "Expat" is a good word, but lets look at a few things, this is an extremely new domain and the idea initially is to get traffic fast, I doubt may of those old retired gits think of themselves as expats, more likely they think of themselves as old retired gits, also expat is a very rarely searched term compared to say tour tourism retire and a million billion other words, personally I would recommend putting some more thought into it, could you get a "Korat" in there with a better sentence?
"Nakhon Ratchasima - The Korat Comunity Board for expats and the Retired", hmmmm, nope still needs some more thought put into it.

Seems you prefer "board" over "forum", still it looks better although I wonder what made you choos board as opposed to forum....
I am assuming the free software has influenced your decision or the way forum software describes itself, I think personally it is a wrong decision to take.

Of course the main thing to think about are the keywords for the market your aiming at, retired expats in Korat? are they British or American? would "Adult Diapers" be more effective than "Adult Nappys" as keywords, medical care must be a big thing among the farangs in korat, is prostate massage more important than spectacles, obviously with the average age of the Korat expat would the younger ones be searching for "Korat Erectile Dysfunction Clinic", I am assuming the older ones have given up all hope of ever getting it up again, but I'm sure there must be some right old stubborn gits in Korat that want to get it up that one last time to impress Lek or Noy or whatever his boyfriend or girlfriends name is.

I'm trying to avoid the mistakes others made before me. "Forum" sounds very stiff to me, a closed circle, far too grave. A "forum" are people, a group with the inevitable fighting among each other and and "defending the group against the outside". "Board" not only clearly denotes the function of this virtual institution but also stands in a better relation to the more self-ironic name koratfart.com: not the Board of Directors  ;), but the Board of the ones taking some liberties like "farting". It's about identification. :D

Gotta get that smilie into the software somehow:

The humor can be added to the header banner, you don't need to worry about people reading text, its the bots you want reading the text, thats why forum is better than board.
