Right. No rules = no breaking them, no bending them, no pushing them to the limits and, for the boring or scared, no conforming to them!  What kind of a life are we left to?

The life our neighbors let us live when they don't know any more mischief! If you can still call some of the mischief expressed on the web in Korat just mischief.

Some like to live out here, cause they want to get away from those overregulated townships where they grew up in. But what are they doing here? Complaining about the lack of functioning regulations. Erroneously of course! All they cannot get into their heads is that society just needs one rule: Respect each other! With a person who respects me I can easily make an agreement. It's as simple as that!

A bit naiive, to say the least.
1. If there's a lack of functioning regulations, why is it erroneous to complain?
2. People can respect each other as much as they like, but that in itself won't stop crime or other anti-social behaviour.

Imagine I respect my neighbour. I also believe he is very rich and does not need all the money he has. I also believe that he's a kind man and he won't mind if I borrow his BMW and drive it to Pattaya for the weekend. A few days later I return the car and greet him with a smile when I meet him. However, he's furious with me for 'stealing the car' as he says, and he has already called the police. I also tell him not to worry about the dent in his car because his insurance will pay for it.

If I believe that respect is all that is necessary, I would be shocked at my neighbours response. However, most people in the real world would be shocked at my actions for taking the car. Respect is only one small part of what keeps society on an even keel.

Or what if I kill someone? The police come to my door and charge me with murder. I tell them not to be so stupid as I only killed her when in a fit of anger with myself and she was just collateral damage. And everyone knows that I respect her, so there's no need to charge me with murder or send me to prison.

To me the point in "withheld"'s post seems to be that they see their home countries as over-regulated, claiming to have escaped this confinement to a place that gives them more personal freedom while complaining at the same moment regulations were insufficient. They'd need to take "the law" into their own hands, advising to destroy other people's property instead of forming an interest group that can deal with their interests in this society. A group that could express their needs for regulations and establish legal ways to enforce them.

As to respect: a person I respect I can openly talk to giving him the same respect I demand from him. I don't have any reason to insult him. I can argue with him getting to agreements. I don't need to take things for granted "by rules I brought from my home pub". Because out here he has never heard of my home pub with our special rules.

Our needs here are to come to grips (rules you might say) that are shared by all cultures, our thai hosts and the different expat groups. But as many of us seem to have run away from rules this is a bigger problem. So our immediate goal should be to find understandings. Ouch! If I don't want to understand you, if I don't want to speak your language, I'll ban you from my forum. Your comments were inconvenient, I felt they were limiting my freedom. Now where do we begin, if the problem starts as early as free speech?

I think this forum should have some rules, only a few hundred to get it started and then more rules can be added each day, to enforce these rules it will need moderators, moderators that are not scared of doing what needs to be done, moderators that like banning people, I for one am willing to step forward and taking that mantle in my hand and banning people, I humbly suggest that I think I should be a moderator for this forum.

Only a few simple rules are necessary......mutual respect, common courtesy and observation of the usual social conventions. Its a sad fact that there will always be nice people as well as those who are not so nice......if rules are non-existant or not enforced, the "not-so-nice" take over the forum.
CIVILISED people can debate, argue, disagree and discuss......even heatedly, without resorting to personal attacks, abuse and spiteful sarcasm.

You're absolutely right. But these are the general rules in our society already. They don't need to be written down as special rules for this board again. But they will be enforced.

People going over the top we had very few only, especially last night somebody had a few pints too much and couldn't keep his hands off the PC anymore. The posts going too far over the top will be removed by me as soon as spotted and archived in case of being needed at a later time as evidence against the poster. The hosts of proxy servers never protect people who committed felonies using their services. Apart from that a poster leaves far more traces about his identity when posting than an IP. The IP can be concealed maybe by using a proxy server. The other information that allows to identify the poster's PC are recorded in the server log of the site. A poster can be identified already with very high certainty by this other information only. Given the circumstances around the posting and the felonies committed by his posting judges rarely hesitate to rely on this information only if it appears that the IP address was hidden by using a proxy server and the operator of the proxy server not complying in revealing the poster's real IP.
