Multiple aliases
« on: March 17, 2016, 07:43:02 PM »
I've been sent a couple of personal messages by two members arguing about an old topic. At the beginning of this board about 7 years ago we did discuss already whether it should be allowed to post under different pseudonyms. We agreed that it will bring no harm to this board, as long as different viewpoints are kept, different roles are played without violating forum rules. On the internet it is not important, who you really are, but what the viewpoint expressed under your current pseudonym is. Only clear name registration with proof of identity could bring the "security" that your opponent in a discussion is not an alias of another person known to you. Now who expects from a webmaster of an internet forum to take care of proven clear name registration? And who would contribute to that forum, when the whole world can read about his personal viewpoints etc.?

When somebody sees abuse in another member's post, he can press the "report to moderator" button above the post and tell his reason for wanting that post to be checked for violation of forum rules. In my opinion there is no use in arguing about a poster's real identity, whether he also contributes under another nick,  on internet forums without clear name requirement! And who would want that? ;)

Sorry for not being able to help you in your personal discussion; but this is just a web board like uncountable others. Most members do post here to let readers know about interesting topics. That's why the ratio of active posters to regular readers is not 1:1 but rather 1:100 or so.

Johnnie thanks for your post. Before I start, I would add you have been unfailingly helpful to KF Members in the 6 years I've observed. And also to me myself although we have 'not always' agreed.
But, on this issue of Double ID, I do NOT believe KF policy or you are correct.
It is of course impossible to 'know' whether Double ID's exist.
But as a policy or in the rules, surely, Double ID should be deplored.
A Forum is, in the Dictionary, a medium for discussion, an exchange of views. What does this mean if Double ID exists ? The resulting discussion IMO is then, just not honest.
Apart from the fact that most Posters use an 'Alias', how honest is it to have more than one identity or alias in a discussion. The second identity can be used to reinforce any point OR to undermine it, with or without malice, as the Poster chooses. IMHO that is totally immoral if we are to respect what is written.
Someone who does not have the faith to express a view, in their own identity but needs an alias, and then needs a second alias to discuss sometimes important topics, is at least, incorrect. IMO 100%
Playing with Double ID is a serious matter and whilst it is impossible to prevent the use of Double ID, I believe that if the KF Policy was to deplore it, then that would be a start and the discussions resulting would then be more honest.
So do we or don't we care about that ?
Again thanks for bringing this discussion forward.

You are talking about a "forum", Roger, while I'm talking about an "internet forum", a "web board". Are we talking about the same? A common rule of "internet forums" is not exposing another member's identity. How can the granted anonymity subsist, if there are people accusing others of posting under different aliases?

Thanks for your reply JF and for taking the point to open forum.

Well of course it's OK to have a rule about not exposing another Member's identity.

I'm sorry I don't see the logic of your last sentence - Double ID's do not affect 'anonymity' because the second alias can only be revealed as a first alias.
Thus anonymity is still intact.

The Poster who I tackled privately about one suspected Double ID was quite authoritative and sanguine about Double ID in principle and assured me there were several Double ID's on KF but IMO this IS a problem because it allows Posters to act with or without malice under a second ID to support or undermine a discussion by a deceit.

The Double ID I refer to has been spotted by myself and others and IMO it should just stop. Some may think it's good fun but why can we not be more honest ?

I have no wish to cause disruption on KF which is a good internet forum and if you JF in your wisdom take another view on this, no problem to me. In that case I'll cut my posting (no great loss except to me) but I would like to continue updating on SCLP cancer vaccines and Swatcats, my 2 great loves ! (That is, apart from the Missis ....).

With all due respect, if it is just a game on here and honesty is not important in our discussions, then I don't see much point in it anyway.

I hope that this 'argument' can re reconciled without further bad feeling.

Roger, did it ever cause anybody bad feelings before, when I found myself unable to follow your advice in running this forum?  ;)

Well JF to me the acceptance of Double ID is just bizarre so I have to agree to disagree. I won't bother you with too much discussion in future although I am burning to vent some thoughts later this week, as the Ched Evans Appeal is imminent.
Off today to a 'Shangri-La', 3-4 km up a mountain track for 'Palm Sunday' and travelling to Korat next week - so see you later. Mai pen lai.

I've been sent a couple of personal messages by two members arguing about an old topic.
Very sad to see one of our members embarrass himself the way he did, makes one think  that his  problem lies deeper than first thought.
hope he sorts himself out.

The admin posts he had been sent a couple of personal messages

Now is the chance for the other person to come forward and give his/her point of view or is he/she going to stay hidden.
