Karma display
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:54:40 AM »
I changed the Karma display to total, not + and - anymore, because some felt that others seemed to have expressed there personal preferences way too much. So now a [smite] just lowers the score instead of showing up as -, unless somebody reached a total negative score which I hope will never happen.

JF - my karma thingy doesn't seem to be the same as everybody else's. Did I break it?? Sorry if I screwed it up by mistake.

It's just natural that you can't vote on your own Karma. But you can applaud or smite everybody else. They probably did that to keep conceited people from applauding themselves all the time.  ;D

It is set to minimum 25 posts before a new member can vote, so people don't do multiple registrations just for letting their "second egos" vote for them. And there is a waiting period of 48 hours* before one can vote for the same again.

* waiting period changed from 24 hours to 48 hours on 4/28/2013

and what with my "karma" i explained before i wasn't trolling the site?

Karma points at present can be awarded by members with a post count of at least 100, which makes 13 of our members eligible to vote by now. Everyone can cast another vote for the same person after a waiting period of 48 hours*. The board does not record who voted for or against you. So some members rather give a Karma point one way or the other instead of writing a personal comment. I wouldn't mind the Karma so much, as long as you're new to the board. Maybe some will vote for you the other way again. I've seen up and down of mine all the time.

Oh and this 'Karma', whatever it is - is funny. Whenever one addresses established posters in any kind of disagreement - down it goes. LOL

I can only establish its correct use. It is meant to keep discussions about personal disagreements from the board, enabling people to express their opinion that way.

Johnnie - there you go again. Not 'making up stories'. I might have made a mistake, as we all can, but I do remember eight or nine prior to this thread but I honestly don't mind, so just in case I'm actually wrong, I apologise in advance.

Negative Karma
« Reply #15 on: January 28, 2014, 05:17:43 PM »
P.S.  Ben, how does one generate negative karma points?

That's a very interesting question, Al! The board does not record who gave what Karma point. So, even I cannot tell who lowered my Karma when I just supplied his post with some commonly available info. It usually doesn't stay low for long! But somebody having a purely negative Karma must have bothered somebody on or off the forum. The posts only sometimes help you find out what happened over the forum. If people feel bothered by a PM they can also give Karma points there.

So, I guess that question can only be answered by the persons who did give the negative Karma points. But Karma is an anonymous evaluation, only available to members who passed the 100-posts mark, since I changed to the post number requirement. I think members who had joined the forum before that change still can award Karma points, if their post count hasn't reached 100 yet.

Hey Johnnie - I just noticed in your June 2010 post starting this thread - you said you hoped no-one would ever get a negative total Karma.
Ben ! How did you do it ? Mai pen lai. If anyone else wants to know how to lose Karma points, I may be willing to give advice as I am good at losing points too.  All the best.

As it says in the song 'Karma Chameleon': "Every day is like a survival" and "You come and go". If one doesn't do anything to make it come (again), after somebody else made it go for one or another reason, a chance has been missed. Another person's call hasn't been heard, or has even been ignored. Karma!

No Roger, you don't qualify for that! The expert in acquiring negative Karma is our member Jazz, he managed to acquire -12 to date. But he even hasn't posted since he announced his own forum here. So, I guess they were given to him for the performance on his own forum, just like he bans members from his forum for posting on here what he disapproves of. Of course he could have been awarded that recognition also for his trolling attempts under aliases.

I can imagine that Ben or others with negative Karma also were awarded that for performance on the other forum, which doesn't have the Karma-function.

With 25 applauds to 13 smites since the last reset obviously not everybody is always a fan. But it's balanced somehow! Many smites seem to have been "compensated" with an applaud after the anger control period ran out. Mine is totally "off balance" with 20 applauds to just 1 smite. Now I don't wonder who gave me that. ;)

If you enjoy pressing it, or if it relieves you, you can keep on doing so for at least 48 hours before it counts one again. I hope your finger didn't get sore!  ;D

Do you think I should set that to a longer or shorter period to change anger control? ;)

No, Lady Dawn, Roger has the highest score of applauds at the moment I think, amazing 31 applauds, the 24 smites must have been typos, but he still has a balance of +8.

Now who gave me that second smite? A lady wouldn't do that! ;)
