Upper Thailand warned of cold weather

The Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a warning for people in Upper Thailand to brace for a drop of temperature.

The warning says the ridge of intense high pressure area from China is still extending to cover Upper Thailand and South China Sea.

Cooler weather with a drop of 2-3 degree celcius and a strong wind are likely to cover the North, Northeast, East and Central regions.  High Mountains will see a very cold weather and frost.  People are advised to wear think clothes.

The active northeasterly monsoon still prevails over the Gulf and the Southeast coast of Thailand. There will be scattered thundershower and isolated heavy falls in the Southeast coast from Nakhon Si Thammarat soutward with 2-4m high waves in the lower Gulf from Nakhon Si Thammarat southward.

Residents along the coast are warned of high surf.  All ships should proceed with caution and small boats should stay ashore, says the warning.

The locals are funny with the weather, if the temperature drops to 20 degrees C then they start complaining of an impending ice age whilst shivering and dogs require coats or shirts to help them through the ordeal  ::). Always makes me smile, as I generally tell them that Thailand only has hot and very hot. 20 C would be considered an averagely nice warm summer day where I'm from and you can almost see the sheer incomprehension of it in their eyes when told that.

6 Chiang Mai districts declared disaster zones

A total of six districts of Chiang Mai province were declared disaster zones as the prevailing cold weather affected 469,132 people, Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation official Khomsan Suwan-ampa said yesterday.
They were in urgent need of about 369,000 quilt blankets, 45,000 acrylic blankets, and 60,000 winter jackets.

After Om Koi and Samoeng districts were declared disaster zones and some 4,000 blankets were distributed to the affected, the province yesterday declared Fang, Chom Thong, Kalayaniwattana and Mae Ai districts as disaster zones. It would initially allocate Bt1 million to each district to buy winter clothing for the affected residents. He said the province might declare Hot district as a disaster zone next week if the temperature continued to drop.

And rainy.  Lebo, we'd better start handing out those Beer Chang blankets asap before this turns into a state of emergency.

The present weather is a nice change from the moist heat of the rainy season but I suppose that I'm better acclimatised for cold weather than the locals. It was a cold ride on the motorbike last evening, though. I shall have to compromise and wear a fleece today.

Cold front moves into northern, eastern Thailand

วันจันทร์ ที่ 12 ธ.ค. 2554

CHIANG RAI, Dec 12 - Temperatures in Thailand's north and northeast has moved to sustained low levels, while residents in the south are warned of likely rain, strong winds and flash floods.

Temperatures in Chiang Rai, particularly Mae Fa Luang district, have remained lower than 10 degrees Celsius for several days due to its high elevation and hilly geography.

The local disaster prevention and response centre, representatives of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Chaozhou Association in Thailand on Monday donated 3,000 blankets to those affected by the cold, mainly the poor, handicapped, the elderly and children from ethnic minority groups, giving Bt300 in financial assistance to 500 people.

In Phitsanulok province, the temperature fell to 2 degrees Celsius Sunday morning at Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park. Many travellers visited Rong Kla Village there to appreciate the beauty of the 'Mae Kha Ning', the seasonal frost phenomenon. The Thai Meteorological Department is warning of cold weather in the area for the rest of the week.

In Thailand's northeast, the lowest temperature at Khao Phra Wihan National Park's Pha Mo I Daeng in Si Sa Ket province was at 9 degrees Celsius in the morning, while villagers along the Thai-Cambodian border at Ban Phum Saron in Kantaralak district gathered together with their pets to set up campfire to get relief from the cold.

Meanwhile, the southern province of Songkhla's meteorological centre issued its 11th warning for heavy rain, strong wind and flash floods from the northeast monsoon for provinces along the Gulf of Thailand, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat.

The temperature drops and it's a national disaster.  I wonder what would happen if it snowed here.

Well, they might collect the snow, wait until it melts, then sell it was purified bottled water.  It came from the moon before the demon tried to swallow it.

Lebo, have you ever noticed that the same phenomena occurs when it rains here?....and I'm not talking about the flooding in BBK, just a simple down pour.

Health watch urged for several areas as mercury drops

Temperatures have been dropping in many regions across the country, with some northern areas already hit by a cold spell.

The Meteorological Department yesterday urged people to take extra care of their health as weather conditions were changing.

"It's just between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius on mountaintops," it said.

According to the weather bureau, the mercury dropped by between 1-3 degrees in the North, Northeast, East and Central regions yesterday under the influence of a high-pressure ridge hovering over the upper part of the country.

In Bangkok and its vicinity, the lowest temperatures were 19-20 degrees.

While the cold weather is proving a welcome relief for many and has even stimulated tourism, it is posing a health threat to people who lack adequate warm clothes.

In Chon Buri's Sattahip district, for example, a 13-year-old boy blamed his mother's death on the chill.

"It's very cold at night," the boy said tearfully. "We don't have enough blankets."

His 49-year-old mother, Suna Jandadan, died in their shack. Her body lay stiff on the floor when police arrived. The mercury dropped to around 19 degrees in Sattahip.

In Sakhon Nakhon, the lowest temperature was 12 degrees and a large number of locals needed treatment for respiratory disorders.

In Nakhon Phanom, officials were closely monitoring the health of dogs at the provincial animal-quarantine station after canine distemper started to spread amid the cold weather.

"We have now vaccinated them. Some 40 dogs are being housed separately," an official said.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department yesterday declared seven districts as cold-spell zones. They are Omkoi, Samoeng, Chom Thong, Fang, Galyani Vadhana and Mae Ai in Chiang Mai and Pang Mapha in Mae Hong Son.

Meanwhile, farmers in Phitsanulok's Bang Rakam district expressed concern about imminent drought in their area.

"The water level in the Yom River has been dropping fast," said Samlee Jaemdee, 50.

She has now dug a 3-metre-deep artesian well in the hope of storing water for her paddy fields.

"With floods having eased, a drought is clearly coming," she said.

For me the only nuisance is the daily variation in temperature. I wore proper shoes today for the first time in ages so that my delicate toes didn't get cold. By mid-day I needed to take them off to air my feet. My fleece was on and off all day too. I still look half dressed compared with the locals.

If there aren't enough blankets, why not light a friggen fire.....they do it all the time when they burn trash or when the roadside needs clearing.  Hell, even the dogs on my soi are sporting dog-t-shirts and sweaters.

Cold spell kills 2 men in N. Thailand, 22 provinces declared disaster zone

BANGKOK, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two men in Thailand's northern Lampang province died of exposure to the cold wave while 22 provinces in the upper part of the country were declared disaster zones, according to Thai authorities.

Ministry of Public Health's Bureau of Epidemiology reported Monday that the two cold-related deaths were identified as a man, aged 52, with emphysema and a man, aged 53, who had drunk alcohol and died of apparent exposure to cold spell.

As temperatures in some areas in the North of Thailand have dropped to 3-5 degrees Celsius while some areas have faced with the sudden cold, people were advised to keep themselves warm by eating hot foods, drinks and doing modest exercise but refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Mitigation and Prevention reported that over 20,000 villages in 22 northern provinces have been hit by harsh weather since early November and so were declared disaster zones.

The provinces are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Uttaradit, Pitsanulok, Nan, Tak, Phayao, Lampang, Lampoon, Sakon Nakhon, Lei, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Ubonratchathani, Mahasalakam, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Buri Ram, Suphanburi and Ratchaburi.

According to the Meteorological Department, a ridge of high pressure still blankets upper Thailand, causing cooler weather. The westerly trough will move over the upper North, causing light rain and 2-4 degree temperature drops.

Bangkok's minimum temperature drops to 16 C

In its morning forecast for 6 am on Monday to 6 am Tuesday, the department said the minimum temperature in the capital would range from 16 to 18 Celsius degree.

The department said the temperature could drop by two to four degrees in the upper part of the country due to an intense high pressure ridge from China.

The mercury over northern mountaintops could fall to 4 degree as the minimum temperature there could range from 4 to 10 degrees.

The temperature on the lowland in northern provinces could range from 10 to 14 degrees.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature on northeastern mountaintops could range from 5 to 11 degrees compared with 9 to 13 degrees for lowland areas in the region.
