Thai teens dig up dog carcass and eat it, turns out dog had rabies

Thirteen teenagers in the Northeast province of Mukdahan this week dug up a dead dog from its grave and dined on its delicious meat — just to find out later the animal was killed because it had rabies.

Dr. Chooyod Chaosirikul, of the Mukdahan Department of Livestock, said that officials put down the dog on Monday after the animal attacked locals and tested positive for rabies.

On the same day, thirteen local teenagers, whose names were not mentioned, dug up the animal's carcass and ate it. The teens were sent to Mukdahan Hospital to receive vaccines. Their conditions will be followed up by the Department of Livestock.

The department has also given rabies vaccines to the pets in the province in order to control the spread of the rabies, Thairath reported.

Dog meat is a delicacy in some parts of Isaan while in most parts of Thailand, eating dog meat is considered taboo. Dog meat trade is also illegal in the nation.
