Shocking cheating in tapioca mortgage

The Commerce Ministry found evidence of possible cheating under the tapioca mortgage scheme of 2008 after lower amounts of tapioca pellets were found in some warehouses in three provinces that should house a combined 193,000 tonnes.

Tapioca traders should have 16,000 tonnes of pellets in Chaiyaphum, 81,000 tonnes in Kamphaeng Phet and 96,000 tonnes in Nakhon Ratchasima. However, an inspection revealed some warehouses did not have even one kilogramme of pellets, said Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapiorm.

He suspected the tapioca was sold in the market during a period of high prices.

The ministry will continue its intensive inspections to ensure transparency in the new tapioca mortgage scheme.

Mr Boonsong and commerce officials as well as the police inspected a warehouse belonging to CS Park Co in the Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima and found 13,421 tonnes likely contaminated with soil.
