Animal parts, wildlife seized

The navy's Mekong River patrol unit seized frozen parts of a leopard and three bear paws as well as live animals worth about two million baht in Nong Khai's Ratana Wapi district yesterday.

The live animals included 100 monitor lizards, 100 rat snakes, 30 turtles and six soft-shelled turtles.

Lt Weerawat Yasothon, head of the unit's Ratana Wapi boat station, said the seizure was ordered after the officers received an intelligence report that wildlife parts and animals would be smuggled out of the country across the Mekong River at Ban Tarn Choom village in Ratana Wapi on Friday night.

Officers set up an ambush and waited until 3am when they spotted a group of men loading suspicious items on to a longtail boat docked on the river bank.

The men ran away when the officers showed up and signalled them to stop what they were doing.

The seized animals were believed to be destined for China or Vietnam where certain species of exotic wildlife are regarded as delicacies.
