A man from Ubon Ratchathani was attacked by a bear that he called “as big as a buffalo.” It came down on him from a tree while he was collecting mushrooms in the woods.

Somporn Panta, 27, sustained injuries from the incident and is recovering in the Sapsid Prasong Hospital, in Ubon Ratchathani, after being transferred from the local hospital. Doctors found and removed a bear tooth embedded in one of his deep wounds. The photo of the tooth was shared repeatedly on social media, reported Sanook.

Somporn was foraging behind Wat Phu Plansung Temple on Sunday night when the incident took place. Apparently, a woman was also treated for a bear attack in the area. She also mentioned the size of the bear when she spoke to doctors.

The national park chief in Ubon Ratchathani noted that Somporn shouldn’t have been in the area behind the temple. Teerayuth Wongpaisert, director of nearby Phu Chong Na Yoi Park, said that the area where the young man was attacked is part of the park that is off-limits because it is the known home of dangerous animals.

Teerayuth said that they would try to warn villagers more seriously about avoiding the area.
