Isan provinces still swamped
Several northeastern provinces remain flooded as major rivers continue to surge.
In Si Sa Ket province, overflow from Huay Samarn yesterday flooded several communities in municipal areas. Nonsawan in Muang district was the worst hit. Boats were the only mode of transportation in the area.
Floodwater was at rooftop level in the Khum Nong Mu community in Muang district for a second day yesterday.
Wichian Saengthong, 39, a Khum Nong Mu community resident, said floods have shown no sign of receding. Many homes were still submerged.
In Ubon Ratchathani, the water level of the Moon River rose by 8cm on Monday, causing the river to overflow and inundate 205 houses in Muang district. Several roads were under 40-50cm of floodwater.
Kalasin remained flooded yesterday as a massive amount of water from the Chi River flowed into fields and canals.
Highway No 214 between Kalasin and Roi Et was under 80cm to one metre of floodwater. Highway authorities yesterday urged motorists to use alternative routes.
Kalasin governor Wiroj Jiwarangsan yesterday said work was being carried out on the road to allow floodwater to flow into the Pao River in Kamalasai district. Water was expected to drain from some 120,000 rice fields in the next few days, said the governor.
In Surin, overflow from the Moon River flooded three more districts, causing damage to almost 100,000 rai of rice paddy.
Vast areas of rice fields in Chumphon Buri, Tha Tum and Rattanaburi districts were submerged.
Floodwater in 10 other districts _ Muang, Samrong Thap, Chom Phra, Sangkha, Kap Choeng, Prasat, Buachet, Sikhoraphum, Lamduan and Si Narong _ remained stable yesterday.
